Warning: Hastily written thousand-word ficlet incoming! Give it a read if you want a bit of context behind the picture and could be bothered.

-----

Summer sunsets in Dragon Village were a sight to behold. Ember heaved a tired but satisfied sigh as she stopped what she was doing for a moment to admire the view out the window. It was like a gold-orange blanket had been laid over the town, painting the white-stone buildings in a warm glow. Ember smiled and picked up the last toys scattered at her paws.

It had been a long day at the hatchery. The hatchlings had been rowdy—well, rowdier than usual—and there had been a catastrophe with a frightened sheep that had somehow ended up in the nursery and had needed Nanny to herd it back out again. On the bright side, Cynder had found the whole debacle hilarious and had laughed for the first time since Ember could remember. For a dragoness who rarely smiled, that was no small victory.

Ember snapped the lid of the toy-chest shut and turned around to find Nanny waiting by the entrance. She was holding the door of the nursery open and had taken her baby-blue apron off, draping it instead over her shoulder. Her vibrant pink scales—darker than Ember's own—were tinged gold by the sunset light.

"Well done today, Ember," Nanny said as Ember cast one last look around the now tidy nursery and walked over to her. "We haven't had a day that exciting since...well, ever. Goodness."

Ember smiled tiredly. "I think I prefer the less exciting days."

Nanny gave a hearty chuckle that made her plump stomach tremble. "You and Cynder handled it very well, regardless."

They stepped out of the nursery together and Ember spotted Cynder herself already heading down the path into town. She huffed and looked over her shoulder in time to see Nanny shut and lock the door.

"I thought Cynder might have lightened up a bit after today, but she still didn't even say goodbye..." Ember muttered, scuffing her paws on the grass.

"She's certainly a closed-off dragoness," Nanny said, smiling a little sadly. "But she's been much better since you started working here. Keep at it and I'm sure she'll come around. I'm sure all she needs is a friend."

"Right..." Ember looked over her shoulder again. Cynder was almost at the corner and would step out of sight within moments. Ember bit her lip. "I gotta go, Nanny. Thanks for handling the sheep!"

"Have a good weekend, Ember! See you on Monday!" Nanny called after her as she darted off down the path after Cynder.

Ember skidded around the corner where Cynder had just disappeared and caught sight of her again. She was walking slowly, in no apparent rush to get where she was going. Grinning, Ember hurried to catch up. "Cynder! Hey!"

The black dragoness glanced over her shoulder just as Ember reached her. Her aqua eyes searched Ember's face. "What is it? Did I forget something at the nursery?"

"Huh? Oh, no." Ember shook her head, falling into step beside her. "I just thought we could walk home together."

Cynder eyed her blankly for a moment, then shrugged and turned her gaze ahead again. "I see."

Silence fell over them like a blanket and Ember contented herself with admiring the sunset glow on the trees and buildings. She had half a mind to chastise Cynder—playfully, of course—for failing to say goodbye again, but thought better of it.

"I can't believe there was a sheep in the nursery," she said instead, smirking as she watched Cynder's expression from the corner of her eye. To her delight, the corners of Cynder's mouth twitched upwards.

"It was pretty ridiculous," she agreed with a snort.

"Imagine if we'd let the hatchlings herd it out instead," Ember continued, grinning unabashedly. "Lecter sure wanted to."

There was the ghost of a grin hovering on Cynder's muzzle as she replied, "It would have been a disaster."

"We probably wouldn't have had a nursery afterwards."

Cynder snorted and grinned, shaking her head. It wasn't quite the full-blown laughter from before, but Ember swelled with pride all the same. She'd never managed to make Cynder laugh before.

"So," she pressed on, practically skipping at Cynder's side, "are you...doing anything tomorrow?"

She tried not to sound too hopeful, but Cynder still gave her a surprised look. "Not really... I was just going to train at the dojo."

Ember tried not to pout, though her spirits did sink. "Oh." Then she frowned and titled her head. "...We have a dojo?"

Cynder laughed—a short, barking laugh that sounded strange coming from her mouth, yet still suited her in one way or another. Ember grinned again. Twice in one day. She was on a roll.

"I figure you've never been there," Cynder said, turning her head to meet Ember's gaze.

"Nope." Ember pulled a face and added, "Not into all that fighting stuff. Do you often go there?"

"Every weekend."

"Oh." Ember frowned and dragged her paws, stalling while she tried to think of what exactly to say. "It's just that, um... Well, I was hoping maybe we could do something together this weekend. Y'know, hang out."

The look Cynder gave her was caught somewhere between suspicious and surprised. "You want to...'hang out' with me?"

The way she enunciated 'hang out' gave Ember the impression she'd never used such a  term before. Ember smiled widely. "Sure! You're fun and there aren't many other dragonesses I hang out with around here."

"I see..." Cynder eyed her curiously for another moment before turning her gaze forward. "Well, you're welcome to join me at the dojo."

Ember wrinkled her snout at the very thought of it. "Actually, I had another idea, if you're okay with it..."

Cynder cocked an eyebrow at her and said nothing, which Ember took as her cue to continue.

"Have you ever been to Dragonfly Falls?"

"No."

"Well, I was thinking we could go there for a swim," Ember said, fixing Cynder with a hopeful look. "Especially since it's been so hot lately. It'd be much nicer than some sweaty old dojo."

"A swim," Cynder echoed, her brow furrowing. "Aren't there piranhas there?"

Ember rolled her eyes and huffed. "Not in the swimming lake! Someone really needs to squash that silly rumour... I mean, sure, the piranhas escaped into the lake when that evil Red dragon was terrorizing the realms and growing his dark gems everywhere, but that was years ago! They were all corralled back into their usual pools and rivers, and there's precautions to make sure they don't escape again. It's perfectly safe."

"If you say so." Cynder shrugged, as though it was no concern of hers. She said nothing else and Ember hesitated a moment.

"So..." she ventured after a beat of silence, "how about it? Want to come?"

Cynder glanced at her. "Tomorrow, right?"

"Right!"

"...What time?"

Ember grinned so widely her cheeks hurt. "In the morning? Is eight o'clock too early?"

"I think we're both used to getting up early," Cynder said, smirking. "Eight is fine."

"Great!" Ember felt like skipping, but refrained for the sake of not looking like a silly hatchling in front of Cynder. She paused and frowned. "I'll have to ask Mum first, but she never says no. So, um..."

She trailed off, realizing they had been standing at the same intersection in the road for the last few minutes at least. Cynder's small hut, a cylindrical white-stone building with a golden cone perched atop it, stood a little ways up the path, nestled at the base of a shallow hill. Ember smiled sheepishly.

"Should we meet here tomorrow?" she asked.

Cynder glanced at her house over her shoulder, then looked back at Ember again. "Sure. You should get home before it gets dark. See you, Ember."

She smiled and turned down the off-shooting road towards her hut, leaving Ember staring blankly after her. Never had she seen Cynder smile like that before. There were smirks and grins and half smiles, but that...that was the first genuine smile Ember had seen on her face. A warm flare bloomed in her chest.

"Bye, Cynder!" she called after her. "See you tomorrow!"

Cynder raised a wing in farewell and Ember hurried on home, grinning the whole way.

Hoooooly carp.

Months of terrible art block cured in a day by this strange infatuation I have with Cynder/Ember friendshipping. Bwaaah, I'm so happy with this. A Hero's Tail has the best art of the original Spyro games and no one can convince me otherwise. It's so bright and whimsical.

Ahem. So... The background is Dragon Village from A Hero's Tail, since that is apparently where Ember lives. And you'll probably notice Cynder doesn't look exactly like the Cynder we all know. That's because this is classic Cynder! Well, my version of her. She's a Peacekeeper and pretty antisocial, mostly caused by her strict hardass of a father (he's big and purple. Wonder what his name is...). I have this idea for a story where she's sent away to Dragon Village for a summer to work at the nursery, in the hopes that it'll straighten her out after a string of bad behaviour. There she meets Ember and eventually they start getting along...

I want to write this. I really do. We'll see. For now, have a pretty Dragon Village at sunset and our two lovely dragonesses taking a stroll.

loved the art and the story you wrote to go with it was great.

Just having trouble accepting classical cynder.
The absence of that jewelry just seems a bit off-putting, because of its ties to her backstory in TLoS, and how her backstory is closely tied to her personality.
I feel as though without the backstory, she'd be a very different character. The physical and mental qualities that came with her backstory (guilt for the things she had done, a desire to redeem herself, excellent skill with fighting and (I'm assuming, because she used to be in charge of a large portion of Malefor's army) strategy) were some of the most appealing things about her as a character.

If they ever do another reboot of the spyro series (NOT SKYLANDERS, that's not a spyro series. I will provide a rant explaining why upon request) then I think Cynder's backstory should be kept similar as to how it was in TLoS. They don't need to keep it exactly the same, but it has to be similar.

EDIT: I don't want to discourage you from writing this into a story, though. Should you decide to write it, I'll be very interested to see how it turns out.

Thanks.

I can see where you're coming from, but personally I think there's more potential to Cynder's character outside of her tragic backstory. I don't think it's entirely the reason for her personality (though it definitely is to a significant degree), which begs the question: what would Cynder be like if she hadn't suffered through all that? She'd certainly be a different character, but how much so? That's something I'd like to explore, and I don't think it would make her any less appealing as a character, at least in my opinion.

Plus, the tone of the classic Spyro games is so different to TLoS that I feel like her dark and tragic backstory just wouldn't fit. In the process of creating a classic-verse Cynder, I'm hoping to give her a less dark backstory while still paying homage to what it was in TLoS. Something like a rough homelife caused mostly by her controlling father (who, if you didn't guess from the hint I gave in the description, is actually a classic version of Malefor). She would certainly be a different character, but I want to keep as much of her 'Cynderness' as possible.

That aside, one of the biggest reasons I want to write this story is because it'll give me a chance to explore Ember as a character on her own turf, rather than changing her and sticking her in the TLoS-verse like most everyone else, myself included, have done before. So, in this case, I'm changing Cynder to fit the classic-verse, rather than changing Ember to fit the TLoS-verse.

I think I'd like skylanders more if they didn't make spyro look like some kind of gremlin. I liked the idea of the figures, and being able to level up characters and bring it over to a friend's house to play with them. Maybe if they made a spyro mmo and you get a figure that is custom made (you get your first one with the game and must purchase an additional one for each separate character you want to make)

Maybe you go on a website and you initially choose the gender, build, and element, then you get to choose the head shape, horns, crest, wings, tailblade, and colors of each part. Along with patterns and stuff.

I don't know why i started rambling like that but I think it could be cool.

Omg yes! Ramble more good Sir! I love the idea of the website, and wonder daily why it has gone into the unpopular bin, but joy! I legit called the new Spyro a gremlin creature when I saw him, so I laughed when you did.

I remember my first Spyro game... Riptos Rage... good times, good times...

Have to say, really like Ember's design. Wouldn't have even guessed it was her unless you said something. (Yes, I know Ember is pink but she doesn't have to be the only pink dragon XP)

Aw, I don't really remember which Spyro game I played first. I have a feeling it was the very first one, though. I remember getting annoyed at being unable to free this one dragon... And I never did manage it until years later.

Thanks, I had fun with her. I wanted to make her kind of pudgy and give her nicer jewellery. And the random scale-pattern down the spine was just a last-minute addition. x3

That's an interesting interpretation of her. I want to keep her as close to her personality in A Hero's Tail as possible, since I want this fic to take place in the classic Spyro world rather than TLoS, though there's not much to go on.

I wanted to have something I've not seen before. She normally either a bitch or fairly weak.
With me she also loves Spyro but unlike many others (including TOA) she actually has a real shot at it. Spyro and Cynder are very different and bicker a lot. Ember is very much like Spyro; playful, open, kind, driven to help others and sometimes a bit too aggressive and self-righteous. Cynder is fairly redrawn and a lot more serious. Spyro wants to forget about Malefor and just enjoy life but Cynder keeps holding on to it. She also likes hidden mysteries and complex magics and Spyro just finds all of that boring. He far more wants to enjoy the peace he now has and play and hang out with his new dragon friends.
Often Ember has no change against Cynder. They have been through so much together that their bond is unbreakable and Ember just is straining their relationship but never comes even close to breaking it. With me she could truly take Spyro away. She also is very close friends with Cynder.

Ember is very confident with me and extremely brave with 1 exception: her mother. Ember has a tremendous fear of her mother. She is constantly spanked by her and is very submissive and also completely obedient. However she's still loves her very dearly and is almost totally devoted to her. She's well read and knows a things about all kind of subjects and knows a lot about fire (however her knowledge is almost all theory, she has very little experience). She's by far my most intelligent character. Spyro is her greatest idol but she's very well mannered and also a little shy around him (however only around Spyro, around others she's very confident). Her greatest wish is to fight him in a battle as an equal. Ember loves battling and may want to join the dragon guard someday. However she also can be quite violent when she sees injustice and also has no problems causing pain to others if she believes it helps them. When Flame refuses to fight her she just beats him up until he has the guts the face her. All in all; she's very strong willed, highly intelligent and has no problem doing what's right.
Flame is the exact opposite; he's extremely shy, redrawn, panics easily and also is quite unintelligent. Ember has always protected him from bullies and whatever else scares him. He kind of sees her as his older sister (even though he is actually slightly older than her). he also hates violence and cries when Ember yells at him when he flunked a battle because he got nervous.

Huh, that's cool. Especially Ember actually having a shot with Spyro in a TLoS fanfic for a change. Usually people are such Spyro/Cynder fans, they'd never even consider it. I guess I've kinda had enough of the 'love triangle' thing between them, though, which is why I want to write a fic where Ember and Cynder are friends and Spyro isn't even part of the equation.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

marinus18 In reply to MissRiverstyxx [2014-12-21 11:12:34 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to give a twist to it.
Ember and Cynder are also friends here and Ember doesn't want to be enemies with Cynder. There also is an OC of mine called Georga who is caught in the middle.
Ember, Cynder and Georga are very close and promised to be best friends forever. Ember doesn't want to be enemies with Cynder but also doesn't like it when Cynder get's so aggressive whenever she does something with Spyro. She just wants to be friends with both Spyro and Cynder but Spyro constantly makes advances towards her. She likes him as well and so she doesn't want to turn him down but she knows how Cynder feels about it and she doesn't want to lose her friendship with her.
However Spyro also doesn't show any loyalty towards Cynder and totally takes her for granted. He refuses to ever listen to her studies of the ancient mysteries and quite often mocks and jokes about it (what hurts Cynder deeply).

Hmmm, how interesting, a pseudonym I had for Cynder in an old, now-defunct fic was Summer; it was going to be the name her mother in that fic would've called her, and it led to a city being named after her: Summer's Dawn.

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2014-12-20 23:50:19 +0000 UTC]

Huh, cool! I wonder if that could be worked back in somewhere? Perhaps Nightshade could reveal she planned to call Cynder "Summer", but was overruled by Malefor's forces or something? Or would it be something that comes up in the rewritten LAL as part of one of Legion's flashbacks? Or...perhaps it could come up when Nightshade and Cynder are bonding in the Avalaria setting...I imagine Cynder would note she likes her name and would never change it, but perhaps she'd take Summer as a middle name?

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2014-12-21 00:12:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, no, I've tried to distance Cynder's origins from that fanfic to this. So far, the 'word from god' reason I've made for Cynder being named as such is because Nightshade saw her playing in the cinders of a burned out torch bowl, thing...

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2014-12-21 00:21:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah, ok. Well, you could still had a nod to it in a rewritten LAL or Nightshade's Story by having a scene where Summer is a name that Legion or Natalie mentions when they're discussing their egg...just as in-joke, mind.

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2014-12-21 00:28:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, yeah, there's Summer, but they could even roll off 'Cindy' as a name Natalie suggests but Legion doesn't really like. He could suggest Summer, and Nat could disregard it.
