Description
It's been a while since my submissin. Still struggling with artist's block. I've often found that I get 'blocked' when I'm procrastinating. I love painting faces, 'cause faces are fun... and they allow me to ignore clothing - which I suck at. I also tend to avoid jewelry 'cause I find metallic surfaces difficult to render. But it ain't gonna get better unless you have a bash at it. And so I decided to focus on this painting of my elf king Eirian - face inspired as per usual by handsome Bradley James/King Arthur from Merlin - and deal with some textiles and accessories. And it's taken a little while... but it's been fun. It's so easy to get stuck in your comfort zone... and then you forget how awesome it is to tackle new challenges, even when they frustrate the crap out of you.
The bling is inspired by the beautiful jewelry I recently purchased from Raven Eve. This is her website link: ravenevejewelry.storenvy.com/
Check it out, it's amazing.

This is brilliant!
I suddenly thought of Aegon Targaryen riding a red dragon and having his hair dyed to match...what?

Thank you. Haven't made that connection myself I must say... but I reckon he probably would die his hair to match

Wow amazing!
I'm also considering to focus more on jewelry, textile and not just face...But i'm so lazy... Do you have any useful advices /stock/else, apart from practice ?

Thank you very much
Well, I'd have to say the main advice is to keep practicing. But for me research is a major par of anything I paint. I collect images, take photos, surround myself with objects relevant to what I'm wanting to paint. I have a massive research library containing hundreds of folders with images of anything and everything. One of my art heroes - McCaig - once said that you have to have your research because you can't have it all in your head. If I want to try and paint satin fabric I'll find loads of images of satin fabric and also try to get some actual fabric to play around with. And then I stare at it... a lot.... really a lot. Stare - paint - stare - paint... and then it slowly comes together. And it's also the joy of learning. If you're not in the mood for learning something new, then it's not a good time to start. For me I kinda have to crave it. Like my newest painting for instance - missterkelsen.deviantart.com/a… - I wanted to have a go at gold in both fabric and metallics. So I stared at golden things a lot. I think seeing the last installment of the hobbit kinda brought that on

You're more than welcome! your art is amazing!
Thanks for the good pieces of advice. It really motivated me to practice more and more... and more. And stare a lot. (one of my weak point is drawing what I think I see and not what I'm seeing... )

If you hadn't said that you think you suck at clothing, I'd never have guessed ! This is a beautiful portrait, I truly think that it's your best up to that day
I've had a look at your previous portraits with clothes, truth is, you've really made astonishing progress, you were right to tackle this challenge ! The headdress is also very elegant, and the store you linked is indeed quite inspiring.
Anyway, this is an awesome portrait and I really can't wait to see the next one !

Thank you very much
I need to challenge myself more... I know that.
It's just so easy to not do it. My time I have for painting is limited to evenings and any time I can find at weekends so I want to have a good time when I sit down and paint... and of course I know I'll enjoy panting something I already know... and you forget the joy of learning something new. Just gotta keep trucking

You don't "need" to challenge yourself it you don't feel like so
I'm just saying that since it was a success, maybe it can give you a motivational boost to retry a similar experience someday. But of course, you need to enjoy to paint before everything else, otherwise it has no point

Thank you so much
It was a suggestion from a good friend of mine who is a huuuge Merlin fan.
I was looking for facial references for two elves in a fantasy story I'm writing. She thought Colin and Bradley would look lovely as elves.
I just couldn't resist
