It wasn't uncommon for children of guard members to be given jobs like cleaning armor, sharpening weapons or even tidying up the training arena to teach them about dedication and discipline. Quetzal was no different and had extra pressure since his father was the local captain. That all changed when a new cub, Su Jin, came. Being an Aether-born, she was shuffled around a lot since no one took her in and just became a permanent member of the guard barracks. What started as a normal evening cleaning up the training arena turned into their own sparring match as Quetzal finally allowed himself to be a cub and not an extension of his father. (Su Jin totally let him win tho, she felt bad for him lol)
