I love the flow and word choice of this but I do think the people can choose who breaks their heart. The image of a "golden utopia" sinking into the ocean is brilliant.

Well when someone attempts to break my heart or seems they may, I simply disengage.
I've broken up with a few guys or come across a few horrid people and just back away before things get bad.
I don't think it'll always work but thus far it has.
