what is fearless?

she slides onto the bathroom floor
scotch heavy on her tongue
and sighs
only to get up
mere moments later
to fix the mottled skin that reddens
after tears
and to brush her hair

i'm fooling everyone.
i'm fooling him because
there is something missing with
us
but he doesn't see it,
doesn't feel it
like i do

she returns to him
bright smile in place
and kisses him on the mouth
dutifully

so does this make her fearless
or strong or brave or just
stupid?
what's the difference, really?

suddenly she cups his face
in her hands, watching him
watching her like he never wants
to stop
and asks,

"is it possible
for one person to love
too much?"

"yes, if it's for
the wrong reasons."

and there is the beginning
of the end

and she learns that what
is truly fearless
is to let go of someone
for the right reasons,
even if you know if will leave
shattered glass
turning in the stomach,
even if you know
it will wreck hearts
