Well this is new. Art for a movie that hasn't even come out yet!

I'm pretty excited to see the new movie Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken. It looks really interesting for what it is, and while the jab at Disney's live-action Little Mermaid is obvious, it kinda gives me Luca/Turning Red vibes with Ruby being a teenager having to accept who she is as a sea creature. Speaking of The Little Mermaid, I find it interesting that they decided to turn the tables and have the "evil octopus monsters" be the good guys and the beloved mermaids be the bad guys. A good, yet probably unintentional, way to satiate those "what if Ursula was good?" theories.

I decided to draw the hero and villain duo, Ruby and Chelsea. I really like their designs, Ruby's especially. There's just a really interesting contrast when you put these girls next to each other. Like, if someone who knew nothing about the movie were to look at them, they'd probably assume Chelsea was the good guy because she looks like Ariel, a popular mermaid. And that made me think of something else. In the trailers, Ruby's grandma mentions that humans love mermaids because they're stupid. And if the humans in this universe really are dumb enough to follow an (unknowingly) evil sea creture, it would make sense how Ruby was able to pass as a human girl for as long as she has.

(Side note, this was meant to be one of multiple drawings for MerMay, but school brought down my motivation tenfold, so it's the only one. Still, enjoy it anyway.)

I'm pretty proud of this and I wanna make more art when I see the movie in theaters. Expect more of this in the summer after it comes out.
