Description One of the many works I created as part of the Great Northern War Compendium. This is of the Carolean Death March 1718-1719 as the retreating Swedish army took the hazardous route over the Tydal Mountain Range back to Sweden.

The Compendium can be found on amazon here

Was this during the time of Charles III before his defeat by Peter the Great of Russia (I think)?

This was at the time of Charles XII who was defeated by Peter the Great's army you could say - this march also was part of the process of bringing his body back to Sweden

Sorry on getting the lineage incorrect.Β  And Sabaton does a wonderful job of presenting the Swedish attempts at empire in their album "Carolus Rex".Β  Would make a fantastic costume rock opera!

they do, I really like Sabaton's work - their Carolus Rex song is one of the best power metal songs i have ever heard and they havew a great one about the Bismarck out now too!

I served under the same banner in my time in the army 20 years ago, sadly the regiment is now closed down.

oh cool, thats very interesting that the regiments had such a long life span, i am not too familiar with what happened to many of them after the Great Northern War

Well it had many name changes since 1718, but before it closed down in 2006 it was named JΓ€mtlands FΓ€ltjΓ€garregemente

This is very well made, as well compostitional, the colors are right and the pic. tells us a story!

thank youΒ  yes, i get the feeling more and more that what makes for interesting pictures most is when there is narrative and so it is something i have to think about now with future work

Jartyom In reply to Mitchellnolte [2016-09-11 11:37:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I often get told by other artists on internet, that pictures have to tell an interesting story, but I still can't figure out how I can do this. Buut it seems, that you already got this phase behind you.

Mitchellnolte In reply to Jartyom [2016-09-11 13:48:37 +0000 UTC]

thanks, it works out for me sometimes, but it is hard to still place it as to what the hook is. i think the having a narrative is part but if i think about it some more, it is not so much the overarching story but moreso if there is some variety of smaller relations going on that one finds the more one looks. i am not suggesting that i achieve this rather it is an ideal. a painting which i have looked at inspiration many times is Horace Vernet's Battle of Hanau where you have this interesting variety of figures moving and out of the scene with varied levels of interaction in the battle all with various expressions. i think such a painting allows the viewer to zero in on certain figures and then imagine themselves in that figure's position, which is at least what makes the painting so captivating for me

Jartyom In reply to Mitchellnolte [2016-09-11 21:15:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you are actually right. This pictureΒ  has so many things to discover and every centimeter of it has it's importance, so the watcher have to ''read'' the whole painting for a pretty long time. This is the real pro-level of painting!
