So I have a question for all you artists out there, being it writers, readers, or masters of visual arts?

Do you ever find yourself approaching a new idea/image/project, knowing it is something you've never done before (and that it is out of your defined skill set), only to find that you're not as horrible as you thought?  Maybe not perfect, but not the bumbling idiot you believed yourself to be?

Yes, I'm talking about my coauthor's and my latest chapter.  It was an adventure to write, to say the least.  But a long time coming, I believe.  As one critic put it prior to posting, when I asked if the  actions of the characters in the latest addition were 'jumping the shark' in regards to the story:

"Too soon? TOO SOON?! Girl, those two have been sparring intensely, had days worth of witty banter going for them, the whole downward spiral for both of them after Teandra died, and the overwhelming sense of joy when she came back from the freaking dead, having to get to know each other again, and a whole mess of other things, one of which includes waking up hung over half naked next to one another.  I don't think it's too soon for anything."  - Xorncon Number 0

And that, my friends, is a classic example of how being to close to a piece can COMPLETELY throw off your perception of it.

I swear, under LunaMax's intense tutelage, I feel like my writing and editing skill set grows from week to week.  It's like stretching your legs after a long nap, when the muscles and joints all protest with that almost achingly sweet pain, the pins and needles starting as you move, yet knowing that the resulting rest was worth all the pain...

It's a joyous sensation, and one that I'd love to repeat over and over again.  And honestly, I'd love to hear from some of you as to whether I'm just weird, or if you've ever felt this too?

Cause, honestly?  I could SO get used to it.

I can't recall the last time that happened to me. It might have been in junior high, in art class. We were drawing still lifes and my subject was a feather. It was like I took a photo of the feather and my hand and pencil were the printer...I duplicated what I saw onto the paper and my teacher stopped me mid-drawing to show my piece to the rest of the class. I wanted to crawl under my desk and disappear into the floor. It's kinda funny; I take criticism well, but not compliments. Part of it might be that I don't like being the center of attention. XD

But MAN. Tenebrea tonight had me stifling my squeals into a wadded-up throw blanket.

That happened to me in my last art class. I'd never really done much in the way of 3-dimensional art, but I found out that I had a bit of a knack for it. My prof told me 'if you think of it, you have to do it' and the way the class was set up, I didn't have time to doubt myself. I came up with an idea and had to go with it and trust in myself. The results blew me away. Not to say I don't have a long way to go. haha ^^ I totally know what you mean.
