Description
Behold, the cat-lizard. Sculpted in ZBrush, textures in Mari and rendered in Arnold. Its composed of the following ingredients (animals) : Argus monitor lizard, a big cat, ostrich ,emu, cassowary, leatherback turtle, crocodile and a crab. All spliced up in my brain.Links to the other shots of the beast:

This is amazing! Did you sculpt it or make it on a 3D model thing on the computer? Everything looks so realistic and the lighting looks real so... I'm guessing it's a real, tangible thing... if so, how?

Yes it was sculpted digitally on a computer, in a 3D software called Zbrush. The colors were also painted with a computer application called Mari (not only the colors, also other textures that will dictate how light will behave when it shines on the creature, like which part of it will look ,wet, shiny or rough and other effects). And the lighting was 'made' with another computer app called Arnold which simulates light. You can arrange some lights sources (which you can tweak how bright they are, color, direction, focus and other setting) and press a button to 'render' and then just wait until the simulation is over and boom , you have this. That's the very general explanation of how it was made.

It's truly incredible! Why aren't other computer made things like this? I've hardly ever seen a cgi creature in a movie that actually looks realistic

Not sure generally. For me at least, the most consistently fake thing is the animation. Too artsy, flowy, smooth and 'perfect' among other things. As still images they would probably look good in certain lighting conditions and backgrounds.

I agree, but it's rare that the creature fits with its environment. Oddly enough the movie Eragon is one of the only ones where I find that the dragons actually fit the environment and lighting.
