Hmm. Well I guess the way I should have phrased that question is, what medium are they close to in how they work? Are they like acrylics or like watercolor, or something in between?
I've been curious about it since the word poster colors (or colours for non Americans) has been popping up an awful lot for me.

Poster colors are water soluble like watercolor, but opaque. If you want to lower value of colors, mix them with white.
In my country, poster colors are popular among art student.

That sounds similar to how gouache works, I think I can maybe count on one hand how many times I brought up the medium of gouache to people and they knew what it was. Most people have never heard of it (that I have run into). I personally think it's it's one of the best painting technologies up there with oils and Photoshop.
