Description

Edit 6/30/22: Sliding in here on the last day of pride month to finally give Jules a slight redesign! This is essentially the first time I've touched his design since 2019. The fact that his scarf covered the star on his shirt and competed with his eye as the focal point always irked me a bit, so I moved it to the back. I was going to make his bandana design more complex at first, like some kind of paisley/striped pattern, but I didn't like the inconsistency I was getting and slapped on a star pattern I made a while back instead. I also think his expression in the first two drawings fits his demeanor more!
Old version of ref sheet

I've had this reference done for a while but hadn’t finished writing the bio until now! Jules is essentially my main Kirby OC right now. I set out writing these things as if they’ll be brief summaries but they always wind up waaaay longer than I expect. The backstories of my Kirby OCs are a blend of stuff from the anime and the games. Also there are a few OCs mentioned here that I haven't even uploaded designs for on DA, but I'm working on it!

Background: Jules was born in Grum, a small village in Hot Land (Kirby’s Epic Yarn level) at the base of Patchland’s largest active volcano. Born a fighter with a spirit for adventure, he spent his childhood trekking around the rocky terrain of his homeland and the nearby rainforests. Captivated by the vast worlds beyond Patchland, Jules looked for any opportunity within grasp to travel the cosmos, which ultimately led him to join the Shards Army.

Some Headcanon Stuff______________________________________________________

Though Jules was born long after Nightmare’s war had ended, the defeat of the Star Warriors and Galaxy Soldier Army cemented Nightmare Enterprises’s monopoly on destruction. In the wake of the war’s devastation arose countless patrons eager to grow their empires through the living weapons they could purchase from NME at the press of a button. These threats and the rise of monster trade through black-markets ensured that Nightmare’s influence still reached almost all corners of the universe.

The Shards, represented by a four-pointed star or cracked star, is an umbrella term for thousands of militias and organizations aiming to become the war's “clean up crew" and to be a thorn in Nightmare’s side wherever possible. Their priorities vary greatly. Some wish to hunt and kill every last monster within their territory, some hack into NME’s servers to sabotage monster delivery systems, others hope to overthrow the very empires sustaining NME one by one, and so on. While the Shards are as ideologically split as can be, it allows their rebellion to more or less escape the full force of Nightmare's wrath.
__________________________________________________________________

Jules spent much of his life traveling from planet to planet to fight against NME in the small ways that he could. However, after Kirby defeated Nightmare and the subsequent downfall of the company, his attention shifted to the monster population itself. Jules was always empathetic towards monsters, believing most could be rehabilitated in one way or another, to the chagrin of some of his comrades. While he had previously worked capture and contain rogue monsters in places they ran rampant, he recently found more purpose in caring for them.

After many years of planet hopping, Jules decided to settle on planet Floria (Kirby Super Star) and take a few monsters under his wing, including Juvalere and a Scarfy duo. He was later joined by Scops, a close friend of his ever since they met on planet Rock Star (Kirby 64) as teenagers. Scops was a wandering musician who needed a change of pace from big city life on Shiver Star (also Kirby 64). Scops and Jules eventually fell for each other and went on to co-found a rock band called “The Sanderlings,” though Jules still prioritizes his caregiving job. Content as he is with his current state of life, his thoughts occasionally drift to his memories of intergalactic adventure.

Personality: Jules comes across as aloof and stoic to those who don’t know him well, but at heart he is a compassionate and introverted nerd. He is open-minded but slow to trust and develop relationships with others. For someone lacking good depth perception, he has an eye for detail and is acutely observant of others and his surroundings.

Many of Jules’s peers view him as fairly clever and courageous, although Jules feels otherwise and often downplays his accomplishments. While Jules naturally places the needs of others before his own, this is partly rooted in a struggle with self-worth and coupled with this is his tendency to conceal many of his innermost thoughts and emotions. Jules has strong moral convictions with an emphasis on mercy, and expresses this to a sometimes overbearing degree. At the same time, much of his inner conflict revolves around balancing his deep-seated faith in people with his pessimism. Jules can get roped up in pursuing lofty goals to better the world in a way that no one can reasonably hope to achieve, but even so he'll give it his best effort.

In light of his faults, Jules has mellowed with age, shifting from a somewhat rash and arrogant teen/young adult compensating for his insecurities to a more thoughtful person comfortable in his own stitching.

Abilities/Skills: Jules’s most cherished ability are his yarn whips. Many Patchlanders are capable of summoning these whips, but few can use them as specialized weapons or tools. Most must train rigorously to use them without intense fatigue after usage, although a lucky few are born with the power to use them effortlessly. Jules was in the former category, but had the added advantage of being ambidextrous, making it feasible to use two whips instead of one. He can’t grip surfaces with the ends of his whips like Yarn Kirby or Prince Fluff can, instead he either forms a lasso or wraps the yarn around his target several times. When using his whips in the more traditional sense, he can deal considerable damage with their spiked ends.

Jules was a proficient swordsman in his youth, back when he couldn’t use his whips reliably, but is quite out of practice these days. Jules is impervious to dying from a lack of oxygen, most toxins and diseases, and wounds that would prove fatal to his non-yarn counterparts. Jules has speed and endurance on his side and does battle by either using his opponent’s strengths against them or taking advantage of his keen eye to deduce their weaknesses. On the other hand, he lacks physical strength and his light-weightedness makes him prone to being flung around by foes like a ragdoll.

Likes: science, lavender-scented fabric softener,  scarves, leather jackets, dinosaurs, gardening, sci-fi novels and movies, crocheting, maple donuts, bacon, rare steak, dancing when no one else is around, Wheelies and anything else vaguely resembling motorcycles, bass guitars, metal, punk, and hard rock music, whittling

Dislikes: cold weather (especially snow), foods/drinks that leave hard to remove fabric stains (grape juice, tomato sauce, etc.), fabric-eating bug larva, static electricity, playing bass guitar with a pick, most ballads

Random Stuff:

  • He is an obligate carnivore (needs a diet mostly consisting of meat to survive, similar to a snake or cat)

  • Jules covers a large scar from a monster bite beneath his patch

  • Uniclods are notorious for spearing rivals with their horns, and though Jules has never done this, he does sharpen it from time to time

  • Jules’s eye, or button, is his main weak point. Sustaining an injury to it will at best be equivalent to a concussion and at worse end his life immediately.

  • While Jules’s body is resilient in many ways, Patchlanders are quite sensitive to their environments. UV rays from a sun, for example, will slowly degrade their yarn. The fact that living on a planet other than Patchland can significantly reduce a Patchlander’s  lifespan is the reason most of them stick to the planet their bodies are adapted to.

  • He is a talented bass guitarist. It’s the only instrument he can play and he isn’t much of a singer.

  • He looks like an average 2-D yarn Patchlander on his home planet, but takes on a 3-D crocheted plush form elsewhere.

  • His yarn color can temporarily look brighter or duller out depending on how much time spends in the sun or his emotional state. Instead of tanning, his yarn fades, taking on a lighter, grayish shade of orange.
