Description Domain of Darwin Contest entry: Whale Evolution Sequence

Download for large size image

From left to right;
1 – Skeleton of a mesonychian (53 Ma)
2 – Ambulocetus natans (50 Ma)
3 – Rhodocetus kasrani (48 Ma)
4 – Maiacetus inuus (47.5 Ma)
5 – Dorudon atrox (41-36.5 Ma)
6 – Killer whale (present day)

It’s funny that with only five fossil critters and one modern counterpart in this series, we can demonstrate a clear transition from land based mammals, to amphibious mammals, to those that spent their whole lives out in the ocean. That’s just with five! A quick search on wiki for transitional whales will demonstrate how many have already been discovered. You do the math.

There were so many I would have liked to add here, but this just got so long. Indohyus, Pakicetus, Kutchicetus, Aetiocetus, Basilosaurus, Archaeocetes (ex; Protocetus, Eocetus), Squalodonts (ex; Prosqualodon), Kentriodon, Mesocetus, ... I kept reluctantly removing animals from the sequence.

Note: these are only roughly to scale.

*I own NONE of these reconstructions by the way. I just went on a web search for skeletals and made this collage in Photoshop for the group. Please if you have the names of the people who do own these images, send them to me in a message and I will gladly give them credit in the description below.

As this species evolves it's mouth grows longer and it's back legs shrink

Ken Hovind says that because whales use their "vestigial" hind limbs to mate that somehow "disproves" evolution. I would like to ask him why would an All-knowing God create a marine mammal in the first place ... he got it "right" with the sharks.

the evolvement of the hindlegs is really interesting oh and the last modern whale looks bad (the way it is made) in full view you see to much pixels!

I find it fascinating...
And yes, the killer whale skeletal is quite pixelated, but it was the best one I could find. If you can find a better one, please link me to it and I'll use that instead.

I would sugest you try to make one yourself and use that as basic - it's easy to make a better qulity skeletton when you already have one

Naa. It's meant to be a collage. And anyway, dinosaurs are my thing, not so much mammals...

So... these are not your original artwork? Are they public domain? I hope there are no copyright problems here.

Miyess In reply to sethness [2010-05-13 23:43:00 +0000 UTC]

I don't think they are public domain. But I did not put my name on the paper, and clearly indicated that the skeletals in the collage were not drawn by me. I have posted links in the description to where I found all of these sketches, and who drew them as best I could. I had trouble finding who drew the mesonychian so I asked anyone who saw this if they knew, to send me the name in a personal message or in the comments and I would gladly add it in.

I have worried about this ever since I uploaded it. I hope I have covered all the bases. Copyright issues were a big part of the Multimedia & Design course I took a few years ago... and I think I have done the right thing here. But I don’t want to get in trouble over this, so if there is anything else I should do; please let me know. If it turns out anything I have done here is in fact illegal, I will expediently take it down.

Thanks.

No, no.... sounds like you've done very well to cover the copyright issue with respect and dignity. I wish all artists were as thorough and straightforward, when citing sources, as you've been.
