Do you mean you want me to create one or you want to know the tutorial I used to make this? And do you want to learn how to draw it or color it?
For coloring, I don't have a specific tutorial for this one but I mostly used Paint Tool SAI except for a slight blur effect where I used Photoshop CC. It's a big mix of things I learned from from digital coloring lessons she gave me, this tutorial for the bushes:
(though it was a lot of experimenting during this one) and for the shadowing, I don't know if I'll be able to find the tutorial that I learned it from because it was a long time ago, but I basically just picked a light purple color, created another layer on top of the flats layer, clipped it to the flats layer and changed the shading layer type to "multiply".
For drawing the chibi, I don't follow any tutorials for drawing chibis, generally. I just look for chibis on DA where I like the style and take what I like from them and see if I can do my own thing with it. I sketched it traditionally (light sketch with Copy not NP Blue color pencil & then go over the lines with a HB pencil) and then I edit anything I don't like with Paint Tool SAI (after scanning it). Like if the drawing doesn't look straight or the body is at a weird angle, I'll select a selection tool, select the areas I want to change on the sketch and then use the transform/free transform tool on the area to make it look right.
If you have any specific questions on what you would like to learn, don't be afraid to ask Like if you have trouble drawing chibis or there's a certain area you like in the drawing and you want to know how it was done. I'm usually very opened to answering this kind of question

I might do a speed paint someday. I'm a little busy at the moment and the way I color often changes from piece to piece but there probably will be one someday

This one is even cuter than the first adoptable, nice work! The shading on the hair is smooth.

Oh gosh, she is absolutely adorable! I love the color themeβpinks and greens work so well together and definitely say springtime! The earring is a cute touch, too. Good luck to everyone!

Yuuuush! Thank you so much! I was trying to pick colors that say "spring time" while still having a palette that's pleasing to the eye. She also has freckles around her nose but you can't really see it at this resolution. I guess that will hopefully be a happy surprise to whomever wins the auction :3
I thought the earring made her look like the goat from the Hunchback of Notre Dame XD (which btw, after watching it as an adult, is really messed up and sad T.T)
I put the end bid time to be after a first bid is made so that I don't have to be bummed if no one buys her and the bid expires XD

You're welcome! I think you've definitely succeeded with the seasonal feel of the image, with the Easter colors and everything. Oh, you finally did freckles! XD At least it's a nice, subtle touch. And now that you mentioned it, there is something ofΒ DjaliΒ with the earring. Does that mean she's now like Pan instead of a dog? XDΒ (Yeah, Hunchback was always my favorite Disney movie because it's so epic and dark.)
Aww, don't be too discouraged. You're new to the adoptable world, and like any marketing endeavor, it takes time to gain momentum and find an audience. Just keep making them, re-listing those that don't sell right away, and never give up! Because you do gorgeous and adorable characters!!

MizDawesome In reply to HaintSoul [2015-03-05 20:10:04 +0000 UTC]
What do you mean by Pan? When I search it, I either get a God, Peter Pan or something about Pan-Sexuals XD
Hahah, you would definitely enjoy Hunchback now that I think about it. My normal reaction to these kinds of kid's movies is "Wtf were they thinking?!" XD Though at the same time, I very much love the old original tales of these stories (like snow white) because it was meant to teach very serious lessons. Actually, kinda unrelated, but I think it was in my Children's Literature class that I had learned that the game "Hide and Seek" was actually meant to train children to hide from people who were snatching them up (I think to work in a coal mine or something o_o).
Yes! Well I think that after my seasonal ones, I'll probably take a little break from them and just focus on original art work and trying to find my "voice" as an artist :3 I do love the adoptables that I make but I don't make them as "copy-paste" as others do, so it takes me a long time for each one. They make interesting design choices, that's for sure, but I find the whole using a base for adoptables that you're going to sell, a rather cheap method to do it. Just not my cup of tea I guess... I like to make every adoptable his/her own "person" lol. Maybe that makes me weird in the adoptable world?
I'm glad you appreciate all the effort I put into my work

The mythological Pan, the faunβlike in Pan's Labyrinth, or even Mr. Tumnus.
Yeah, I love those kinds of children's books and movies. It's definitely more valuable life lessons, seeing the darker side of the world. That's why I enjoyed Spirited Away, it reminded me of all those rather morbid kid's tales I grew up with; even Alice is a pretty dismal story, Wonderland rather twisted and frightening. XD Oh, I hadn't heard that about playing Hide and Seek, but it makes sense; all those old nursery rhymes were made for reasons such as that, too. It's totally awesome!
Well, I know I'm definitely excited to see more original work from you that's not an adoptable! I don't think you should give up making them, but you're right, creating them is likely not going to get you anywhere with your art since there's only so many ways you can draw 'em. As you said with all my efforts, when one style gets frustrating, or you need a break from learning and studying, you can doodle an adoptable; no need to limit yourself! And I appreciate that, putting more effort into your characters rather than sticking to a single formula, or bases. I think "copy-paste" bases are more for people who don't/can't draw maybe? I know of superhero bases for OCs but I'm not familiar with adoptables so I dunno. Anyway, good luck with everything!!

Ohhh I see. Hahah, My bf and I always joke saying: "NO PODEIS REGRESAR!" I think I spelt that wrong but we watched that movie for a Spanish class so we watched it in Spanish with English subtitles. It means "YOU CANNOT RETURN" man that pan was really intense. That was a creepy, dark but very imaginative and creative movie... so sad too >.<
Oh actually, speaking of Spirited Away, have you heard of this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gmmv6M⦠(I watch too many of these videos). The one for Totoro has a really messed up conspiracy theory too, I think you'd enjoy it.
Yush! We live in times & a countries where we are very much lucky and almost coddled loll.
Yes! I'm working on a piece that let's me practice perspective drawing of an environment with a character within it. So it'll probably be a pretty complete piece. And it's not going to be dark exactly... but a little disturbing with a touch of cuteness & beauty, inspired by the wonderful camilladerrico.deviantart.com/ which I admire very much! And also inspired by something a watcher said on DA. I don't think it'll look as cool as in my mind but I hope it'll be ok >.<
The thing with adoptables is that I don't have much of "presence" here on DA yet and I put a lot of heart, work in effort in my pieces and it's a shame that they go pretty much unnoticed by people who love adoptables. Plus it's REALLY hard for me to sell off my designs to strangers so I thought.. why not better myself as an artist, find my voice/style and if I can get better & more attention I can sell prints :3 On top of that, adoptables help me practice my digital coloring but it's not what I need to focus on right now imo, so those are pretty much my reasons. Plus right now I'm freaking the hell out cuz I just read that the drawing tests are held in mid-March and I don't even have an invite yet (my file was not accepted/denied yet) but screw them, I have good grades and graduated with honors from cegep and high school so I don't see why I wouldn't be accepted to the test >.> then I freaked out cuz I found out only 80/200 students get accepted AFTER the drawing test... Β so what I understand from this is... I need to practice like crazy every single day for hours AND possibly send an example of my current state to the head of the department to see if he's willing to give me some feedback on what to work on to up my chances >.> Is that cheating? XD You're supposed to know "basic perspective" but I dunno where basic ends... one point perspective, two point? Three point? (probably not 3...) <- This is what I look like when I procrastinate and then start freaking out. Though to be fair.. I had started practicing more seriously recently and thought the exam was going to be in April like the English cegep I had gone through before
So imma just die for now... and try to post my practice stuff I guess? Β

I always watch foreign films with English subtitles, too, so I saw Pan's Labyrinth with the original dialogue. And all I remember is how my friend thought it was cute how "antibiotics" didn't have a Spanish word, and she kept repeating how Vidal (the military stepfather) said it, with the heavy accent, throughout the rest of the movie. It was funny! XD My favorite scene, though, was in the underground world with the creature that ate children; that was scary! Oh yeah, the ending was sad... it kinda started this personal perception discussion between myself, my friend, and my sister as we all brought something different away from the emotional message...
No, I hadn't heard the conspiracy theory surrounding Spirit Away, but it makes sense from a Western perspective. I think the idea of it is not so much a hidden message of child prostitution, but just growing up in general. All Chihiro goes through is simply different than how most American kids grow up, the environments a reflection of her own culture (without being some sort of stab at the darker side of Japan because obviously Miyazaki grew up with similar childhood concepts and values). I think Asian children are raised to value family and responsibility better than Americans; I go to Chinese take-out places and see their 5-year olds running the registers or helping in the kitchen and it's the same thing. Americans think it's cruel, but I think it's a great preparation for how the real world functions. Life is cruel and we coddle our youth too much. (Probably why I like the Runaways, too.)
Anyway, I probably digress. This is a cute adoptable and I'm glad she found a home!!
How goes the perspective illustration piece, with the legs? I really hope you haven't given up on it because the concept is brilliant!! It's also interesting to watch you work with different challenges, both in style, Watcher comments, and simply trying to master that gosh-darn perspective you've been diligently studying for months! Keep at it, Amy girl!! I know it will be an AMAZING art!!
Well, it certainly is hard to establish a presence here on deviantART. There's millions of artists and art fans on here so it's a sea of people with limited time and interests. Again, the whole self-marketing aspect. But with adoptables, I know it can seem quite disheartening when you put so much effort and passion into the characters only to have them ignored, especially when you're hopeful of lots of bids and high prices (I remember that feeling just listing stuff on eBay ). I wouldn't let that get you down, though. Look at all the comments you've gotten, and people who finally do visit your page LOVE your style and characters! Even if it's not something you feel is important or should get your focus doesn't mean you have to completely give them up. Like you said, it helps you improve your digital coloring. Why not make it a thing to create one new adoptable per month? Just to keep your name out there, and for future print sales and commissions. It's better to put time and effort into something in the art field, right, since that's where you wanna be? And the more you do, the more attention you'll receive. It takes time and dedication, that much I've learned. But unlike me, I think you have it in you to see it through to the endβthe end being you becoming the world's best artists with a following to rival your current idols!!

It's pretty amazing that all three of you had a different take on the ending o_o It's been a good while since I've seen that movie but I'm still rather impressed by all the creativity that went into it. Like the scary children-eating creating (he was the one with the eyes in his hands right?)
Nah I don't think young kids working with their parents is cruel. I think it teaches a good work ethic and who knows, maybe that's how they get their allowance. I don't see that as being much different than doing chores. Personally, I never had an allowance, though maybe if we did, we would've been more motivated to clean and help out. My mother always had the mindset of "You should help out because you want to help me out! Not to get paid" if I recall correctly. But come on, as kids, who the hell thinks that way? I remember getting in a pretty big fight with my mother just cuz I gave her a snarky answer once. She was coming in with groceries, I believe, and she asked like "Do you want to help me with the groceries?" and I think I answered "Well I don't waaant to, but I will to help you out" kinda thing. At least that's how I remember it. And I remember her getting super mad at me cuz she didn't like "get it". When I tried to explain to her that, of course, given the choice I wouldn't want to do it but that I would be willing to help her out. She got mad and said I should want to or something o_o maybe another misunderstanding? Anyway... that was a bit off-topic lol but yeah basically, I agree that American children need better family values but especially a better work ethic. Cuz sometimes adults just don't make sense and then demand respect and get mad if you question them o.0 so sometimes it's hard to have good family values depending ony our family. Though I think that doesn't really matter in asian cultures. I guess I'm just a back-talking snot. Whatever, I call that a conversation
I almost forgot about it but it popped back into my mind today (maybe it was reading your comment actually XD) I still like it and want to finish it some day but right now I have more pressing projects I'm really glad to hear you're looking forward to it so much though
I think Alice will mostly surprise people if I can get it right since it's not really a shojo story at all.
Thank you for the support!
I do want to keep doing them but since adoptables are more towards bidding and I can't seem to get more than 1 person interested everytime, I think I'm gonna work on my presence on DA a bit more first and work on other projects before going back to it. I do have the other designs already drawn up and ready to be colored but they're also not just a commission but a personal design that I put my heart and time into creating and I think that they deserve to be fought over a bit more, because I think they're quite good :3
You're really sweet to say all that about me making it to the end (I doubt myself a lot too you know!). I think you could do but you need to be able to self-motivate yourself a bit more because getting pulled into the darkness like that will tear you apart and you'll only end up with regret and sadness cuz we all know your loves are horses and writing so you gotta do SOMETHING with those. Your mind always goes back to those, so I know they're important to you. My mind did the same thing with drawing whenever I was contemplating some other career option. They all seemed more practical but my heart just didn't wanna hear it.
I saw it but the drawing looks a little boring to me and doesn't inspire me at all so I think I would be having a lot of trouble getting around to it. I already procrastinate a lot with things that do interest me lol.
Thank you! I think it's probably actually more like 40/100 because the program puts together the stats for the 2D and 3D students for some reason, but that's pretty cool too I'm still wondering what my score was on the test
Sure thing I'll have to get around to posting those in some sort of sketch dump this weekend
