Description
OHMIGOD, YES!!!!When I heard that were getting not one but TWO new metroid games, I flipped the fuck out. I was so goddamn happy when watching that trailer for the 3ds game. It's amazing enough that that Nintendo is finally giving the franchise some damn respect but the 3ds game is A PLATFORMING SIDE SCROLLER!!!!!! YES!!! Metroid fusion is my favorite game of all time and I always preferred the 2d metroids. But after Metroid prime 3, I figured any hope of getting another 2d metroid at this day and age would be impossible. So it's so satisfying to hear that the're making another proper game. The announcement of Prime 4 is pretty cool too but I never liked the prime game, though I am happy to see the series get another game in general.
I can't wait for this new game. Now nintendo just has to bring King K rool back into the donkey kong games and they'll have redeemed themselves.
Hope you like.
Samus is from Metroid/I own nothing

It's strange though that it's s remake of the second game. That's already random but I never actually played the second game, it looked a little too dull even in comparison to the original, but this new one still looks amazing

Actually, that has been explained--the shoulders of the Varia Suit are mostly machinery of some kind, as shown by numerous cross-sections.

I haven't played much Metroid. Though I've played the NES and SNES ones. It didn't beat them because, for the NES one, I got lost easily, and, for the SNES one, I got stuck at the penultimate dungeon/area where I had to fight these hard as fuck golden Chozo-imposter aliens. I simply did not knew how to get through them so I gave up. But yeah, I'm glad they're reviving Metroid after all these years.
And they better bring back King K. Rool; he's the one who started the franchise in the first place!

Yeah the first game is confusing but I eventually memorized where to go by counting the doors. And super metroid is hard as shit, especially with the gold guys you're talking about, but I eventually got through it.

Maybe so, but they've dropped the ball hard with several of their secondary franchises. Metroid's been suffering since 2010, F-Zero's basically dead, Star Fox is stagnating because fans have made Nintendo afraid to do anything but endless Star Fox 64 remakes, it's been for-bloody-ever since we last saw a Wario game, EarthBound basically survives through fandom strength alone...

Normally I'd agree, however, the last 2.5-D Metroid was the Other Mβ¦
MercurySteam's work on their Castlevania reboot didn't end well for them either. The head of development kept cramming in features that were detrimental to the gameplay.

TheSwedishElf In reply to Mizz-Britt [2017-06-16 05:24:46 +0000 UTC]
Other M is decent as a game, minus the ridiculous permission system. As a narrative, it's godawful, what it did to Samus was even worse, and it fucks up various key details of literally every single game that came before it, and that's usually where people's complaints are directed. That and the insane statements made by Yoshio Sakamoto regarding the game, the series, Samus, and even the players, like his apparent belief that we won't take a scene seriously if Samus wears any other colour besides the standard Varia colours.

I do not care. I hate so much when people say they hate the game for those reasons because what in the world does that have to do with the actual gameplay? It's still a great game, looks great, and is a prequel to my favorite game ever
π: 0 β©: 1
TheSwedishElf In reply to Mizz-Britt [2017-06-16 06:04:44 +0000 UTC]
Honestly, the fact that it connects right into Fusion makes me hate its narrative even more, because now when I play Fusion, a game I love, I'm forced to think of Other M, hearing Other M Samus' droning monotone when she monologues, or remembering how Adam treated her in Other M when she interacts with Computer!Adam.
I think those are pretty legit reasons to hate it though--if all those factors ruin the experience for someone, how good the gameplay is probably won't make any difference. And personally, I only felt the gameplay was okay, but that's mainly because of how unlike Metroid it feels and things like those stupid sequences where you have to search out and scan a pixel-perfect tiny area.

Mizz-Britt In reply to TheSwedishElf [2017-06-16 12:38:51 +0000 UTC]
Nope, still a bad reason to hate on a game with great gameplay, especially since I didn't mind how they did samus, she was far from perfect but it wasn't the worst thing ever.
π: 0 β©: 1
TheSwedishElf In reply to Mizz-Britt [2017-06-16 16:18:33 +0000 UTC]
Oh, yeah, turning her into the total antithesis of who she's always been, even altering her physical appearance so she's no longer imposing, and then the writer admits he's always seen her that way and wanted to attract more traditional-minded older Japanese men to the franchise by writing her as more "traditional wife" material, that's not terrible at all. :V Hell, we're talking about a game that literally has Samus herself trying to convince us that all the badassery we saw from her in every game before this was all in our imaginations and the badass we love never really existed. And worse still is that the game basically made it seem like Samus' gender is the one most important thing about her as a character, and that, along with the atrociou rewriting of Super Metroid's story, was all for the sake of pushing some really stone-age ideals and backwards beliefs about women and motherhood that many Japanese are trying to let go of.
And no, it is indeed still a valid reason. I'm not giving a game praise because its gameplay was okay if everything else sucked and made the experience miserable for me. Sonic Boom and DmC are technically playable too, should I also give those a pass just for that?

I'm reading your comment, and while I do see where you're coming from, there's one part that confuses me: the "traditional wife" part. Have you heard the term "Yamato Nadeshiko"? What it means is, yes the female is submissive and largely kind, but at the same time they still can be tough, particularly in defending their loved ones. I actually partially see Samus here as that: she's emotional, yes, but she's still a badass.
Sonic Boom? Technically playable? Have you SEEN the glitches?
π: 0 β©: 1
TheSwedishElf In reply to DJNetwork [2017-07-22 21:09:05 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, no, that's not what he was going for, he makes a point in the script he wrote all on his own that Samus was secretly anything but badass the whole time, according to how he always personally saw her. Also there's kind of a difference between being a planet-destroyingly epic action hero and simply being able to stick up for loved ones, and even bigger difference between the latter and, well, being a total emotional wreck like Other M Samus. Even if that were his intention, the mere fact that he'd look at Samus, a female gaming icon since 1986, a takes-no-shit sci-fi superhero, Ellen Ripley's armored Amazonian video game counterpart, and think she needs to be more submissive, emotional and conventionally feminine simply because she's a woman and he believes it would get more men interested in the games is terrible enough.
And yes, Sonic Boom IS technically playable. The fact that it can be played through normally and finished shows that yes, it is playable. Playable =/= 100% glitchless and awesome in every way. If that were true, MANY games would qualify as unplayable.

DJNetwork In reply to TheSwedishElf [2017-07-22 21:31:57 +0000 UTC]
OK, NOW I'm seeing the problem. Now, there's nothing wrong with having an badass who at the same time is emotional and feminine. It can be done right. I think that, written correctly, it can give some deep emotional study of the character, and what toughness really is.
Here, though, that's not what happened. They made her emotional and feminine, but forgot that first and foremost, she's a badass. If they had taken out the submissiveness, reworked the voice direction, and, you know, completely re-written Adam, we could have had a great, deep character study on Samus, on how she builds up this image of a tough, Amazonian badass, but the façade is cracking, she's letting her emotions bleed through, and she's having trouble reconciling with them.
Why they thought the Authorization Mechanic was a good idea, though... MAYBE they wanted to show Samus as obeying orders, but also to show her finding a way around the situation. Find an alternate solution without her gadget. Or they were dumb. Probably the latter.
OK, you have a point on Sonic Boom. It's at least a GAME. More then can be said for Ride to Hell.
