Description

Y The Alien was searching the galaxy trying to find his lost friends when he started receiving a strange signal originating from Earth. Following the signal Y landed at a sand factory in Utah.

Upon landing he was attacked by the crazed Coyote gang members Beezwax and Boogie who had been sent there to destroy the factory. Y quickly routed the gang members but only found an empty building where the signal had originated.

Disappointed but undaunted Y scanned and eventually picked the signal up again and traced it to a ski resort in Colorado where he was then attacked by the Vigilante’s who mistook him for an enemy. Incensed by this Y rampaged through the resort destroying its snow making machines before leaving.

Afterwards Y finally decoded the mysterious transmissions which told him that some aliens crash-landed in the Yuma Desert not too long ago. Heading to Arizona Y decided to look for clues leading him the to a giant Aircraft Junkyard.

Y found wreckage from an alien craft hidden among the aircraft wrecks but he was once again attacked by the Coyotes during his investigation. Y quickly chased them away and became determined to find out who was sending him these signals.

Tracking the signals led Y to Valley Farms in California where a group of the Vigilantes attacked him. Angry and annoyed over the unprovoked attack Y destroyed all the bridges around the farm to prevent the Vigilantes from following him out of the valley.

Y then tracked the signals down to New Mexico where he met the Vigilante Dave. Y was instantly charmed by Dave despite initially seeing him as a hairy creep and the two became fast friends.

Dave then told Y of the secret government instillation called Site-4 which had used technology from a crashed UFO from the 1940’s to reverse engineer weapons, aircraft and other inventions including the modified radio dish Dave had been using to try and contact aliens in deep space in an effort to befriend and learn from them.

Now that he knew Dave and not his missing friends had been sending the signals Dave told Y he had heard rumors the base had also dissected the aliens from the crash site Y became enraged and vowed to avenge his fallen friends.

Y flew back to Site-4 and attacked both the Coyotes and Vigilantes who were battling each other across base. Both teams joined forces to drive the berserk alien out of the base.

Despite the overwhelming odds Y managed to come out of the battle unscathed but he had depleted his fuel supply doing so. Hiding his Luxosaucer behind a rocky mound in the desert Y went in search for more fuel.

Loki, a former Site-4 test pilot and crazed member of the Coyote gang trailed Y and once the alien left his saucer Loki stole the saucer and attempted to escape with his prize only to rapidly deplete its remaining fuel supply and send it crashing back to the desert floor.

Loki survived the crash, stumbled away from the wreckage and was presumably arrested. Y, who had witnessed the whole debacle was horrified when he realized he was now trapped on Earth.

It seems like the developers changed their mind half-way through the game and went from using a standard 1950s  “flying saucer” model which is seen in all the FMV sequences to this chrome, angular ship that seems to be inspired by the ship from the film Flight of the Navigator. Even though it’s a 1980s film the story  jumps between 1978, 1986 and back to 1978 so I think the saucer redesign was probably an inside joke referencing this film.

If you don't know what Vigilante 8 is, read this:

In the 1970s the world was suffering from a world wide oil shortage. The USA was heavily dependent on affordable gasoline and was on the verge of an economic breakdown. Strikes, riots and crime were running rampant and all available law enforcement was brought into metropolitan areas which left the outlands unprotected.

The Oil Monopoly Alliance Regime (OMAR), a foreign multinational oil consortium had it's sights set on monopolizing the worlds oil trade and it's biggest opponent was the USA which opposed OMAR's price fixing schemes.

Bent on forcing the USA to its knees OMAR hired terrorist Sid Burn to go to the US and commit acts of mass destruction and chaos designed to send the country's economy over the edge. Sid immediately traveled the American Southwest and formed a gang called the Coyotes and began targeting American oil refineries, alternate energy sources and terrorized and robbed small towns and settlements along the way.

With nobody to turn to for help, a ragtag group of citizens victimized by the Coyotes led by the trucker known as Convoy banded together as The Vigilantes, who quickly became a major thorn in the Coyote's collective side.

Desperate to get an edge on his enemies and looking for a way to cause more destruction, Sid Burn heard the rumors of advanced weapons based on UFO technology housed at the mysterious government installation called Site-4 located somewhere near Papoose Lake, Nevada.

Ambushing Site-4 Sid's robbery went bad when the Vigilante's unexpectedly showed up and as a result the world's most advanced weaponry found it's way into the hands of both parties.

With their normal vehicles modified into rolling engines of destruction the Coyotes and Vigilantes now wage a war across the American Southwest with the fate of the USA hanging in the balance.
