Shown here is one of Bowser's most basic units, the unarmored Koopa Trooper. As can be assumed, their closest relatives are the common turtles, but the Koopas' brains make them the most intelligent reptiles of any species-almost the same size as a human's.

Koopas in Bowser's army are taught to hide in their shells when threatened-a reflex that comes naturally to them. However, unlike the common turtle, Koopas often oil the bottoms of their shells, making them slide when kicked or hit. This is a Koopa Trooper's most powerful form of attack, since a speeding Koopa shell can reach up to 25 miles per hour, enough to break bones or even kill on contact.

Not all Koopas are servants of Bowser. Many of these race have made independent nations or towns, of which Petal Meadows is the most well-known example. For more on Petal Medows, look up the Article "Rogueport and the surrounding locales".

Variety in Diet can cause the Koopa's shell to change in color. The main color variations are Red and Green, but during the takeover of Dinosaur Island, Bowser's troopers achieved such a varied diet that any number of colors were found in the shells of occupation forces.
