Description
This shot is small (sorry; I forgot to save a larger version) - it's an example image I worked on for a tutorial on using layer masks with adjustment layers.Several of you who saw my "Dark Bride" image caught my comment about it being a "photoshop experiment" and said they didn't see any photoshop. Good. That means the experiment worked.
The tutorial is here: [link]
Learning how to use layer masks on adjustment layers is a technique that will, I guarantee you, catapult your photoshop skills to the next level. Or my name's not George Bush!

I am brand new to photography and I have GIMP (which I am just now trying to figure out - yikes). Can you please tell me how you got such an interesting color? I know from your article that you didn't post-work it to get that effect. Was it the sweep, or camera settings, or a filter, or...
Also, (you probably get this all the time, so I apologize in advance) what lighting would you recommend that a newbie get in order to do artistic nudes? Keeping in mind that I have a limited budget?
Thank you for any assistance that you can provide.

If you go back through my journal entries here, there's a set called "ask the photographer" in which I explain a bit about how to find and work with models. The short form is: sign up on modelmayhem.com, say you're a beginner, and start looking for local models that are willing to work with beginners. If you find the right model, they'll help you. But those models usually don't work for free, I must say.

I have a friend on FB who has offered herself - and her husband, who reportedly has a "perfect body". I have lots of naughty poses in mind. And I found someone on CL who was looking for an agent, just starting out. So I offered an abstract painting and photos for her portfolio as trade. She is interested. I am hoping that photos on disc will suffice. I should have my lenses and equipment by June. I am getting a zoom lens for abstract photography, then a portrait lens. Mid-level lenses.

I wouldn't waste my money on lots of lenses. Get a decent zoom and use that. Modern optics are really really really good; the day is over when you need 'prime' lenses at each side (it has been since the 1960s)
There are lots of people who offer and very few who actually do. Good luck with your friend - I hope that works for you!

Hmmm...o.k.
I have a great feeling that she won't back out. She is really looking forward to it and doesn't have an issue with her body or showing it off.
Thanks!

I enjoyed that tutorial and the others on your site, I'm glad you put the time into sharing your setup information.
The art thing balances my technical career as well, it's very interesting to see the two worlds brought together in art tutorials such as yours. They are part of why I use dA... to learn as well as appreciate. Nice work as always.
