RESPECT MY COPYRIGHT.I know you guys don't REALLY watch my portfolio because of my weird political/artistic statements, or the photos of girls with their panties falling down. Know what? I don't really do photography for that reason, either. The reason I do photography is because when I see something like this, I want to record it forever, and pass it on to others.
Model: RC, lit 2 softboxes camera left, flagged off with 2 black sheets of foam-core - another gridded spot from camera right shining on the backdrop. This illustrates the set-up:

Oh, I get it. The background has a light to dark gradient running R to L and the model is lit L to R. So her dark R leg contrasts with the bright right background, and the highlights on her left contrast with the dark L background. The details of the pose then follow. Where she turned with light on the right leg you would lose the contrast. I really like how the background participated in the composition. Also, being in B&W you just have to deal with brightness rather than working with complex color. This was a really amazing lesson. Thanks!
