Description
Pencil. 9x12". Based on a photo by(Thanks for letting me use it!
This is an allegorical drawing, the way I see essence of every human being. Every one of us is both good and evil, which is why I consider heaven or hell to be highly unlikely. Every one of us deserves to go to both. However, I don't deny the presence of some sort of higher power, up there somewhere, pulling our strings...

wow...again,i am amazed..i find his stance both defiant and submissive..a combination we all cling to at one time or another...and i totally agree w/ what you wrote in your descripton of this piece...something good in us all,but something bad dwells within as well...

You know what I love about this? The little heart on his chest. That is just awesomely adorable!!!
And I agree with your concept of heaven and hell. No human is all good or all bad.

But your idea is great, simply amazing. Your pencil technique is mindblowing, great how you do shadows! (And plus, he looks so handsome ^^ )

those horns are fantastic, but good God they would be heavy! Your pencil rendering is so smooth and I love the way you did the wings, no outlines, just white. beautiful!

Good point about the horns, but I guess that's entirely his problem! I'm glad you like it.

Relating to the allegory and the metaphysical aspects of this illustration- I find it interesting that you choose to give an androgynous quality to most of your male figures... speaking metaphysically this represents aspects of both the male and female characteristics of the human psyche...
I believe you would be right in ascertaining that 'heaven' or 'hell' is not 'out there somewhere'... they are states of being that exist within ourselves, therefore heaven and hell are right here on this earth, in this realm..
As you state, I also believe a divine intelligence created the order of the universe, and directs or guides us from a meta-level.. If there were no 'God/Universe/Allah/Creative Force', there would be no order, no pageantry, no art, no thought, no music, no vibration of any kind- only the primordial darkness, which would not even be darkness, really, since nothingness has no color..
You're a person of real depth, M.W.
Keep up the good work...

Thank you, I do so appreciate your detailed and in-depth comments. The reason for the somewhat-androgynous figure here is exactly as you state it, actually. As for the rest of them, it's simpler: I just prefer gentler, more vulnerable guys. As much as I'm fond of traditional musclemen of Boris Vallejo and the comic books, I think fantasy art needs more of the opposite. So I draw them for the same reason I draw fuller-figured women. Same as not all women are supermodels, not all guys are Schwarzeneggers (and nor should they be, and being the opposite doesn't automatically make them gay, either).

well, if it did, then I guess some people would have called me gay (which I'm not) when I was younger... now I'm just old which a lot of people view as having become sexless- (and is that such a bad thing, after all? Not to have to worry about the demands of the hormones, or whether or not you will ever find that 'ideal' someone- but we know there's no such thing as perfect, although it remains an ideal)
Keep up the great work! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next...

Ah, duality. As a subject in artwork, I don't think it'll ever get old. And as usual, your pencils blow me out of the water! I love that proud, provocative expression on his face. I feel like he owns me or something.

There's a lewd joke in there somewhere, but I refuse to go there for the sake of maturity.
Beautiful. Instant fav.

Thanks! I think the duality is much more subtle in your work (I love how you handle it). I don't know, I wonder if people realized what this was about if I didn't write the description.

rho-cass In reply to MJWilliam [2005-01-12 23:10:17 +0000 UTC]
Well, I figure it's nice to have the description there, just to get your point across. I find that people usually read whatever they like into a picture anyway, whether the artist had a specific narrative in mind or not -- and especially in cases where the artist provided no description at all. The artwork is usually the first thing to meet the eye, and the viewer can infer a lot and come to their own conclusions in those scant few seconds before they scroll down to read the description. I think it's pretty interesting to see how others interpret my work, for instance. Seems like there are a thousand different ways to see a piece of art.
(Forgive me if this is a double-post; I'm in Internet Explorer right now and it really seems to have a vendetta with this site for some reason ...)
