Few people know how wonderful Marilyn Monroe was. She knew Ella Fitzgerald before Ella became famous. In fact, she used her celebrity to help rather than oppose. Marilyn asked a club owner she knew to give Ella a chance in his club but he was hesitant because of Ella being black. He didn’t want to mess his business up. Whereupon Marilyn made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. She said, “You hire her for a week and I will come and sit front and center every evening.” Needless to say, the crowds came too. And as we all know now, Ella Fitzgerald was then invited to sing anywhere she wanted.
