Description
I just filled up my sketchbook. It was a 5X7" cheap-o brown moleskine. I think for my next one I will upgrade to the real moleskine - hopefully it has nicer paperMost of the drawings are from paused TV (a few internet or magazine thrown in). Please don't assume I like a show because I drew it - ha! I just took whatever was on at the time.
None of the drawings has been removed except for the occasional personal doodle, so you can see my mistakes alongside my (much rarer) successes.

On your other post I asked about if you paused the tv, and here you've answered that, so sorry... but here I see the scale... thanks for the inch marker. Wow, I can't believe you do these at this size. That is amazing to me. I don't like to draw faces smaller than about 2.5-3 inches from chin to top of head because of the amount of compressing of the details I have to do. I suppose I should practice doing this to be more versatile. All that aside, your discipline and skill level are truly impressive, and thank you for sharing.

Sketchbook pages are my favorite thing on deviantart. I am glad people aren't hiding them in their scrapbook section anymore. ^^

I have a large hardback moleskine and the paper quality is great, I love your work btw. Any certain type of pencil you use? I am currently making due with a cheap old lead pencil, and I mean, it gets the job done, but I am wanting to invest in some nice ones for sketching, let me know if there's any type you recommend.

Clicky automatic pencils. I have a full set of art pencils from school days, but it is just too much work to deal with them. And extra effort usually means I avoid doing it and avoid doing the art altogether. With clicky pencils and a bag of repacement eraser tops (damn, I burn through those little guys!), I just pull out the sketchbook whenever I have a few minutes to spare.

I love, love, love looking at sketches and these ones are great!
Your faces are wonderful, the way you catch the expression in a realistic way is very refreshing.

Thanks! I love sketching people. It doesn't really have a viable career path, unfortunately, but whenever pesky Day Job isn't interfering and comic pages are done, this is what I most like to do.

wow, I love these sketches! The faces are so alive and I love the shading too. How long does it take you to do one portrait?

Thank you! They take about 10-30 minutes. Any longer than that and I cross it out and give up.

Wow, I found this on a BSG search but your Natalie Portmans look GREAT (she's HARD to draw) and I even spotted Sam Tyler! Brill! I'm definitely checking out your other stuff.

Haha. I think all my Natalie's are crap! But Minnie Driver? Easy. I wish I could figure out why some people are so simple and some so hard. Natalie, I think it's her mouth. It has a weird shape. Number 6 has a similar mouth and I have trouble with her too. But oddly Giada was easy, and she looks a lot like Natalie... *sigh*

Thank you!
I've been given a few sketchbooks over the years, but I've never really *committed* to filling one up. I usually draw a few things, realize I've covered the first ten pages with crap, and then hide it and go back to drawing on loose sheets. But it's actually the mistakes in this book that helped me just relax and have more fun with quick sketches, instead of obsessing for hours on one thing (that, and the 30 minute pause limit for live TV - ha!).
So this was a great experience that I do recommend. I think my skills definitely improved, and I'm going straight on to book #2 for more!
