Whoever said blades became obsolete 500 years ago, well, time to suck on it.

Sketched on paper and then tidied up in Corel Paint Shop Pro X2

while i enjoy the redesign, the weapons are lacking thrusting tips. I'm curious, why did you choose to design them this way? speaking specifically to their effective design, not aesthetics.

Thanks

These swords are primarily intended for slashing. One extremely, extremely sharp edge coupled with augmented strength, either via muscle suit or exoskeleton, let's the wielder get in some pretty deep cuts, if not outright disembowelment, amputation or beheading.

Running someone through is still possible, but discouraged in case the blade gets wedged in the process, either on say, the ribs, or a piece of equipment on a vest. The blade tip more or less reflects that approach. Quicker to slash an enemy who may be wielding a gun across the arm or neck and move on than to stab and then retract or forcibly remove them.Β

why aren't these issued in pairs like the classic Japanese arrangement? either for duel wielding or w/ the short one as backup?

Personal preference. Some do use them like that.

Oh it says they have to chose one or the other.

Typically they will. A taller operator will choose one, a shorter the other, but some mix them depending on their technique.

[insert lots of technical sword fighting martial arts jargon and blade design concepts here, along with a few references to personal experience stories]

i like the reasoning behind the design, but you would still be able to maintain that functionality while allowing for some thrusting capability by using a slightly longer, say 0.5" to 1.0" longer, tip and a tapered edge over a slant like you have. this would allow for thrusting, but only in specific situations and when attacking specific areas. more often than not, one of the weakest points in a suit of armor of any kind will be the area under the chin, between the chin and the neck. the Japanese Katana was actually designed in part to take advantage of this. while none of the basic sword forms of Japanese martial arts involve thrusting, the curved tip of the blades could be used to thrust at an opponents upper chest, where the armor, in combination with the design of the sword, would deflect the sword upwards into the much more vulnerable neck area. other weak points in armor are other areas that, given the right situation, a well placed thrust will be much more viable that a slashing or chopping motion. for example the armpits, kidneys, upper middle of the back slanted towards the shoulder blades, and the base of the neck on either side are prime areas where, in the right situation, a well placed thrust is much more effective, damaging, and clean that a slash or chop. even with augmented strength and advanced technology, any bladed weapon will dull, and is subject to the resistance of armor. while getting a weapon caught on bone is not a possibility to be ignored, if the weapon is already capable of defeating advanced exoskeletal combat suits then i doubt something as soft as bone will give it too much trouble.

Interesting

I'll looking in to modifying the tip when I get the chance. Thanks for your input

no problem. I really enjoy the depth you have to the backgrounds of the weapon designs, as well as the weapons themselves.

Mr-Dr-Sweetness [2014-10-25 00:52:58 +0000 UTC]

What is the maximum length that the Sentinel class's blade be?

And theΒ minimum effective length of a Guardian class?

MOAB23 In reply to Mr-Dr-Sweetness [2014-10-25 01:24:24 +0000 UTC]

Sentinel can be up to 70cm, while a Guardian can go down to 30cm.

Most carry one Sentinel, while some bigger Ravens (Ox, for example) carry two. Others carry combinations (one of each) or one or two Guardians, usually in your smaller operators.

Aside from 'going silent' moments, these will be used fairly frequently, especially since there's a number of enemies carrying similar blades.
