What's your method of colouring? I figure the previous black and white version is more than just reference.

Coloring is honestly the easiest part of the process, I just make a new layer and set it to "color" and basically mess around with gradients until I like the result.

I just used some fancy foliage brushes, started from the back and worked my way foreward. Then I put a picture of an actual forest over top and set the layer to overlay. Some additional tweaking and blamo, you've got yourself a background

Haha, going from Detail 1 to Detail 2 is like "Ok draw some geometric shapes as a base...good. Now draw every single grain of sand on that beach over there..."
