Melody is my favorite princess! She had better reasons to run away because people treated her like an outcast and her mother lied to her about her mermaid heritage. While Ariel wanted to protect her from Morgana, for Ariel to just lie about her mermaid life and keeping Melody confined from the sea turned into pure selfishness and didn't think of Melody's unhappiness on shore where people were cruel to her for being different.
And I HATE it when people said "She should have listened to her mother and not give the Trident to Morgana!" or "Melody is a bitch!" or "This is all Melody's fault!" when it was never the case, the people to blame are the people who mistreated Melody and Ariel for lying to Melody and keeping her from the place she loved and that caused her to trust the wrong person, and when Melody found out how her mother just lied to her and kept her from the sea, Melody thought her mother was ashamed of mermaid heritage and wanted to keep Melody away just so Ariel can continue her human life while Melody suffered and couldn't be with the sea. That's when Melody gave Morgana the trident because Melody thought if her mother was willing to lie like that, what else could she be lying about and Ariel was never to be trusted since Melody can never talk to her.
The moral of the movie was that if you keep secrets from someone, in your family or not, it will come back to haunt you and when people or your loved one finds out YOU will look like the guilty party because there are some secrets that should NEVER be kept and that almost costed Ariel her daughter.

I agree with you for the most part (though in all fairness, technically, she should have listened to her mom, even if her anger was somewhat justified, since that would have averted the near-disaster, but I don't blameΒ Melody for doing what she did, since I'd be pretty ticked off as well), though I wouldn't call what Ariel did pure selfishness. Was it extreme that she did that, yes, but on the other hand, she WAS trying to protect Melody from a very definite threat out there (not to mention, the only reason she had to do that was because Morgana tried to feed Melody to a shark during her christening, so the circumstances behind it WERE extreme as well). I'm pretty sure that once the threat of Morgana was taken care of, she actually WOULD have let her play in the sea freely. At least Ariel had far better and more justified reasons for trying to keep Melody away from the sea than Triton did for keeping Ariel from surfacing. If you want parents acting out of pure selfishness, I suggest you look at the Griffins from Family Guy, and just how callously they treated their own kids, ESPECIALLY Meg Griffin (besides, it's not like Ariel wasn't suffering herself from being away from the sea, since she briefly touched the water before Melody noticed, a bit sacrificial really. And I'm pretty sure selfish people would cast aside even their children for their own benefit. An all about me attitude if you will.Β If anything, that Ariel is actually trying to endure not going to the sea at all just to ensure her daughter's safe is pretty selfless if you ask me.). It may have been misguided of Ariel to do that, but it most certainly wasn't selfish at all, let alone pure selfishness.
And like I said earlier, telling the truth actually does have a tendency to make things even worse than before, especially if they are not ready,Β as I cited with what happened when Genesis told Sephiroth the truth about his origins, what happened when Kefka told Terra the truth about how she basically went mad and beat Onion Knight into a bloody pulp, and what happened when Belle confirmed there was a Beast and exposed the mirror, and if Melody DID inherit Ariel's reckless streak, it's actually a pretty good idea to hide it until the time is right. After all, if Ariel didn't hide her heritage and was open about it, what's to say Melody wouldn't end up becoming reckless and try to challenge Morgana and get herself killed as a result, like how Ash Ketchum frequently acts in PokΓ©mon?
And like you,Β I get irritated with those comments to Melody as well, just as much as I get irritated when people call Ariel that. Even if I hated Ariel, I still would not say that she was ever selfish in that instance (or in the original movie, for that matter).

With Morgana being a threat, Ariel is justified in what she trying to do to protect Melody. But Ariel completely cut off all connections to the sea when she was a mermaid and Melody is part mermaid, and the sea always calls out to them and when they deprive themselves of the sea it causes them to be depressed and Ariel shouldn't have kept the mermaid heritage a secret and told her about Ursula and Morgana and why she must take caution when entering the sea with either Triton, Sebastian or her aunts.
Of course, that I understand. With Melody though, she has respect for her mother and while she does have Ariel's reckless streak at times, she also has Eric's self control and would often think of the consequences before acting in situations and would listen and obey if someone does tell her certain things and why. If Ariel did tell her why she can't be in the sea and about Morgana she would understand, but if there is a threat that was about to get Ariel, herself or Eric Melody takes action.Β
If only they made the movie a little better.

That I do agree with, making the movie a little better. Maybe if the Special Edition was the original version, I wouldn't have had nearly as much of a trauma-induced hatred of singing. They'd still need to work on the plotline overall, though. You might have a point there, but we aren't really sure how much Eric's genes will have a makeup on her nature. To be honest, Ariel does have respect for her dad as well, even if she is rebellious. And in the TV series and to some extent the original film, even she expressed caution as well.
Still, at least it's better than Ariel's Beginning (it's funny, Lassetter cited Return to the Sea as being one of the reasons there should be no more sequels, yet he actually BOTCHED Ariel's Beginning by making it utterly divorced from the original film?), and it's certainly better-handled than The Force Awakens (at least several of the plot points made some degree of sense despite essentially reusing the original film, unlike The Force Awakens).

That's what I think to for the sequel. When it comes to Melody she also has Eric's shy nature and trying to keep calm and cool, so she would probably be easier than Ariel was as a child, it's also shown Melody tries presenting herself as a proper princess and all she wants is honesty.
If only they made it better, like Morgana kidnapping Melody as a baby.

I don't know about easier. I do agree that she'd probably be a bit more manageable, though.
Personally, if they did it a bit more like Cooler's Revenge from Dragon Ball Z, where they are shocked at Ursula's apparent survival (since Morgana was apparently so looked down upon by her family that they don't even mention her existence, they wouldn't even know Ursula had a sister), only to learn late into the film who Morgana is and also have a climactic battle, it actually might have gotten better initial reviews.
Either way, I like Melody and Ariel equally, and I understand both their motivations (besides, like Ariel and Melody, I also had to grow up struggling to where I am today due to my being autistic, so I have a connection with them there.). I do think they handled Melody being an outcast much better than Belle being an outcast in BATB, though (and in all fairness, I wouldn't be surprised if Ariel was also viewed with suspicion by her kingdomΒ due to her mermaid status).

Melody is quite more manageable.
I think ti would have been better if the antagonist was an apprentice of Ursula, like a rouge Mermaid who was outcasted from Atlantica.
Same, though I wish that the creators of TLM2 did a better job.

I'm pretty sure Ariel's more manageable than you think. If she wasn't... well, let's just say that Ariel'd behave more like Broly in this clip Β (in other words, she'd be very dangerously unstable and probably going to literally cost Triton an eye just for trying to talk. Oh, and blowing up more than a few civilizations while going hysterical.).
A rogue mermaid, huh? Well, that's a chance at actually making Vanessa her own character.
I do think that Melody as a character was handled far better than Paz Ortega Andrade from Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker/Metal Gear Solid V (both being voiced by Tara Strong).

AH! One of my favorite Disney movies! YAY!
Amanda
I agree about the hair though. I mean, I knew it was he ponytail because I'm an avid Disney watcher, and she has her hair in a ponytail like the whole movie. But it does look kind of strange to someone who doesn't know Disney movies backwards and forwards like I do. lol.

first of all i know practicly EVERY disney movie by heart and i didn't put her ponytail in because it didn't work very well with the angle her head is in. ~Ani

Oh! I don't doubt in the least that you know Disney by heart, lol! I was talking about other people, of course. A Disney lover knows a Disney lover.
Yeah, I can see that, it looks like it would be difficul to draw it in that way. You could have done it over her shoulder or something... it might have worked that way.

Um, that's a good piece, I guess.
hope you don't consider my cooment as flaming or something, I just want to give you some advice.
What I like in this piece is that her smile shows how happy and excited in this scene, and how her hair is beautifully shaded. Hey eyes are very detailed and cute, for a moment, I was lost in them.
Sadly, her head is TOO big for her shoulders and body, I have noticed that in come other artworks of yours, but they weren't showing like here. I, too, had the same problem, but with some practicing you'll get over it. But focusing on the proportion of the body before the details of the head, face, hair.... etc.
Another thing is that her hair looks a bit short. I know she has a ponytail, but you could have made it show, at least a bit, so it wouldn't look so akward.
Sorry if that ofended you, I just wanted to advice you so you could get better.

Yeah, you're right.
I tried myself after commenting to settle on a place for the ponytail, but it looked very akward, but I like this way.
