Makes you think who (in his childhood) made him that way? Who broke him in? Who abused their power to make him fear so much? It brings a human quality to him when those questions are asked.

 I personally don't believe he has suffered anything specific. In the book, his parents died and he cared for his younger brother. He liked to study and so became a priest. (At that time it was the same of being a scientist.lol). I believe the Disney version is the same. For France, he's doing his job perfectly and before the french people he is a good man. At that time nobody liked the gypsies. You could see an example of this in the movie, the scene where the mother pushes her child away from the Esmeralda as she danced.

When you lived a bad and short life the best thing you could do was pray for when you die go to a heaven. The whole life of the people revolved around this single fact.

Today the same thing happens. Several immigrants flee from wars or just try to have a better life in other countries. But if they are illegal they are arrested or sent back. Those who manage to legalize themselves are treated.... diferently by some people.
(You will always be seen as an alien never as a human.)

Racism and prejudice brings out the worst of people.It is a defect. You can love someone who smokes even by hating cigarettes. But it is not something eternal. People can change. Learn to listen and love. But unfortunately in the age of the cathedrals, the religion dictated every thing, even chose kings!

I'm not saying that the church made him a bad person. I'm saying he was a normal person at his time. Everyone was afraid to go to hell, everyone was afraid of witches and demons, everyone was controlled by this power. Fear.

True, to each his own I guess.

Frollo could easily be written in all sorts of ways and he has been, very well mind you and obtaining the knowledge to his religion and so forth as a child doesn't necessarily have to be a dark experience. Although, I refuse to believe he had a healthy childhood. I just believe covering certain issues that were considered "norms" at the time make the story more interesting and thought provoking to the contrary IMO. Especially through the eyes of a gypsy.

I just see every child indoctrinated into hate/religion by a superior as merely a product of that superior's own hate and a victim themselves. It is a form of psychological abuse, even if the person falling for it doesn't believe it or see it. I just believe it's pure evil to tell a person, let alone a child that they are going to burn in a pit of fire merely because they misbehaved or refused to follow a certain set of rules. That conditioning does damage. True. everyone reacts to things differently, but sometimes it doesn't come with a huge case of psychosis.
