Description This is my interpretation of small anomodont Venyukoviid Suminia. Since venjukoviids probably possesed a kind of kreatinous beak base in combination with teeth I draw this animal in the same way. The eye sockets of Suminia were huge, so the eyes were big as well, and the jaw muscles were very strong. It fed on horestails and other permian plants growing in swamps.

A really funny looking animal!

What kind of extraoral tissue is this?

It is a wrong one. A beak/teeth combination is not possible. Suminias would probbably had lips for oral food processing. I better draw that version.

i guess this was just an ugly little animal... no one's rendition of it seems to look nice. oh well. not everything has to be cute.

Was it a plant eater with those teeth?

Yes! (see Rybczynski, N. and Robert R. Reisz, Earliest evidence for efficient oral processing in a terrestrial herbivore, Nature 411, 684-687(7 June 2001))

"It's a very basal therapsid as well! It looks like it could have nocturnal vision with such large eye sockets. I like your artist's reconstruction of this peticular venjukoviamorph. It's pretty realistic looking!"

Thanks for the comment and giving more information about this funny looking animal. The image actually has not been finished yet, I plan to add some hair and adjusting details.

Suminia was the reason why I started drawing terapsids!
