Description EDIT (2011/11/11): Someone recently favourited this very old piece of mine, bringing it back to my attention... so I reformatted it a bit for some slight improvement. I apologize to my watchers if it shows up in their MCs. I would change my old comments (how embarrassing they are lol...) but I think if I read them again in the future, I can get a good laugh at myself. /endedit

Well, there you have it. 'Tis me!

I originally doodled this for fun, but then I went a little overboard. So there you have it. Another worthless deviation.

Yeah, I'm depicting myself as a cloud. Or clouds, rather. Why, you ask? That is indeed a deep question, but to save space, I won't rant about it.

In any case, this is the first time I've drawn so many expressions, so yeah, they aren't so great. Don't hurt me... please... Oh, and in case you haven't heard yet, I have the worst editing skills existing. So yuppers, it's fairly obvious where I edited, as usual. And yes, the clouds aren't perfect. I'm not perfect either, goodness.

And of course, any suggestions for me on how to improve are very welcome. Remember, only telling me that I'm terrible at drawing isn't as helpful as if you explain how/why. Yuppers.

So, I hope you guys liked it Which cloud (or clouds) are you like right now? And which is your favourite? Yeah, I know that the Pain one is messed up, and most say the Tired one looks like its eyes are = (equal signs), but I like the Tired one anyways And the grouchy one isn't unfinished; it's back is just turned to you.

So yeah, tell me what you think! ^_^ If you want, of course. Tis a free country, I say!

------

Media: Pencil, eraser, pencil crayons (for the small random amount of colouring that I did), paper, and a messed up scanner.

Time Taken: 3-5 classes at school, me thinks. Probably only about 1 hour in total though, since I didn't spend all class (obviously).

References: ABSOFANTABULOUSLY NONE! Because I didn't look at any clouds while drawing, or look at any people's expressions ^_^

Legal Stuff: TEH CLOUDS ARE MINE!! MINE, I SAY! Thou shalt NOT stealeth them!! *angry face* So yuppers, this pic is (c) to me.

x3 Glad you think so~ Yeah, of my old drawings, this is probably the only one that doesn't make me cringe when I look at it (probably because this one doesn't show any humans... hah.) Thanks for the fave 8D8D8D

haha...no humans? XD either you do not like humans (like most of us) or you really do not like your own drawings of humans...I like drawings of humans, but a couple of friends of mine - all of us hold no love for the mortals *evil grin*

Mojofooka In reply to saphsoul [2012-08-10 04:23:20 +0000 UTC]

Lucky then that all humans are eternal beings rather than mortals? Just that not everyone will be enjoying their eternity...

I want to head/desk whenever I see my old drawings of humans and humanoids, mainly because I had no concept of anatomy and proper proportions, and the faces I drew were awful xD It's worse when I remember how I used to think those drawings were fabulous... |||orz

saphsoul In reply to Mojofooka [2012-08-10 21:32:01 +0000 UTC]

haha...well...we just don't like humans in general. XD

As for the old drawings...I don't know. My old drawings were all free-hand replications of something good...so they weren't really drawings and I never had to worry about anatomy...of course, there would be times (and there still are) that I tried to put too many folds in the clothing or too much detail into one part of the drawing (usually the waist) and have the character look like he was a half-used tube of toothpaste...*shudders* I either fixed or scrapped those ones... Anyway...all I ever did was copy when I was a child and that does mean that I have more presentable pieces, but it didn't mean I was an artist...

Mojofooka In reply to saphsoul [2012-08-11 07:41:00 +0000 UTC]

Wellll being able to free-hand replicate what you see is still a skill. I have some of my old replication attempts too, and those are sad, sad things. Actually my very first picture post on dA was an attempted replication, and I was so ashamed of how it was a massive fail despite being a (free-hand) replication that I removed it x_x But yeah, if you closely study what you're drawing (which you probably do when you replicate), you can learn a lot artistically speaking even though you're not doing an original piece. c:

LOL Oh man... at least you actually realized that clothing wrinkles exist though... I didn't realize that until the last couple years, and I still have huge issues with placing them despite reading so many tutorials on clothing wrinkles. *rolls over* failfailfailfail Dx

saphsoul In reply to Mojofooka [2012-08-12 01:49:28 +0000 UTC]

I learned clothing folds from free-hand copy...free-handing and doing details first instead of the ovals and circles...well, from that i learn how to draw detail...basically, I used to never start with the circle and cross whenever I drew faces...I'd start wherever I thought it was natural...and basically I'd continue on a line until I couldn't go any further, then I drew a different part until I was satisfied with using it as a reference point to go back to the other line etc...that's what i Did whenever I copied...

this year, was kind enough to show me a few pointers in how to draw...from her I learned chibis and how to start with the cross for a face...

Also, for clothing wrinkles, I dream them up myself, but it takes a long time because you don't want them all to look the same and you need to know where the bigger ones are and what shape they should be in at different parts of the body...then it's about how far they jut out and then how far in you need to go back to prep for the other one, and how soon...etc...so hard... There have been many fails especially with sleeves...the folds in the shoulder and elbow are the hardest there...and the folds for knees are really hard....I'm getting better at the ones that pool around the shoes though...now...if only I could draw shoes...XD

And, thanks to you, I'll have something else i'll have to post here someday...charts of my (crappy) Icelandic and Russian Writing...

Mojofooka In reply to saphsoul [2012-08-12 06:04:40 +0000 UTC]

Yuh I copied like that too xD Well, except I'd miss out on all the detail like a true fail xP

That's good When I learned from a how-to-draw book (lame, I know), I used to start the face from the circle, but I've gotten lazy and nowadays I pretty much always start with eyes or the side of the face...

Them clothing wrinkles are so annoying D: My shoes still look like loaves of bread after all these years Dx The only difference is now they're more proportional than the feet/shoes I drew in the past I feel like the problem is more my lack of shading than the shape of the shoes though, but I'm not too sure heh.

Oh boy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

saphsoul In reply to Mojofooka [2012-08-17 03:22:15 +0000 UTC]

Missing detail is not a fail...it's a phail...XD

And how-to-draw books? I have a few...never worked...I only bought them if there was a certain picture in them that I wanted to copy my own way...I would just look at the final result and copy from that instead of going through their "12-step-program!" however...a lot of my friends think I need a 12-step-program..xD

Anyway,it depends on what view I want to draw...profiles, I usually start with the nose and basically the outline of what makes the face and then I add the chin, mouth, and either eyes or hair depending on which one will block out which. If the hair goes over the eyes then I draw the hair first...usually...and if it's a style not blocking eyes, then I draw eyes first, usually, so that I can position how far the hair has to fall away from the eyes.

And never fear the dis-proportioned feet...just think, Walt Disney couldn't draw feet either to begin with...look at Mickey Mouse...it looks like Disney made Mickey step inside two solid blocks of cheese and just walks around like that.

As for the lack of shading...yeah...those leather jackets I draw only look awesome when shaded...and those gundam outlines and line-art are nothing without shading. Basically, shading adds something extra and makes the drawing look sorta 3D instead of 2D...outlines only go so far...shading is half the battle...heck, for me it's probably 75% of the battle.

I am a failphailfailphailfailphail! XD

LOL I did sometimes borrow them just to look at the pictures I liked, haha. I tried to pick up steps but usually would find that I did a horrible job anyways

Some people can make pretty much anything look good though. Like `JohnSu and rectangular faces ... xD

saphsoul In reply to Mojofooka [2012-08-18 04:16:21 +0000 UTC]

XD. you're not *that* bad...it was actually because of your amazing sketches that I actually got the nerve to pick up a pencil and draw for the first time, of my own will anyway. I'm serious here. Remember that drawing that you made of a girl wearing an off-shoulder dress? you made it in church and then I tried to draw something close but literally ended up drawing Death? I still have that picture somewhere and that was actually the driving factor that got me to start trying to draw things out of my own head instead of copies.

And yeah, I try to follow the steps but I get bored and just decide to draw things my way about a quarter of the way through...if I even get that far...

And those people that can make anything look good...wanna know what they are called? TALENTED! Plus...if you can use a tablet right then anything looks good...I envy those that can draw with tablets...I can never get my art to look that good or the colours to look that awesome...but I'd suck at tablet-ing...so I admire it...but I haven't the time or money to start it myself. That's why I will make it my goal to become a great...or at least a decent artist using the most common materials...mechanicals, cruddy erasers, and pencil-crayons! XD

Oh man I remember that drawing because you showed it to me again recently and I was like GHAOSEDIGHWA;GHA WHY ISN'T THAT BURNED O_O Well.. I'm glad at least it served to spur you into drawing more without reference xD;

I've given up on learning digital, so I'm also going to be doing traditional for the rest of my drawing career it seems xP

Given up on digital? Who knows...if I ever get bored and got enough money to blow on it...maybe...

Mojofooka In reply to saphsoul [2012-08-19 04:19:00 +0000 UTC]

*dies*

Mmm I've looked through digital colouring tutorials and such, and I think I'm too lazy to try to pick up all the complex steps for colouring techniques xD I'll just stick with trying my patience every time I colour with pencil crayons

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

saphsoul In reply to Mojofooka [2012-08-20 03:20:57 +0000 UTC]

exactly! IT takes forever to learn to colour digitally, and you've gotta click how many times to find the right shade...when with pencil crayons or marker etc it's reach, grab, use, toss, repeat.
