I don't know. To me, Mufasa and Sarabi seem older as parents in comparison to Simba and Nala in the sequel.

Obviously, this is completely made up xD A younger Mufasa and Sarabi, before Simba was born.

Simba was not originally Mufasa's heir. In fact, Simba was born as a replacement, the new future of the Pridelands.

Mufasa and Sarabi were blessed with two cubs not long after Ahadi's passing (Mufasa and Taka/Scar's father): Jua, the Future King, and Thamani, the Princess. While all creatures respected the Circle of Life, the arrival of a long, dry season would cause catastrophe.

Food was scarce; the herds had migrated and left the carnivores that remained starving. Members of the largest and most powerful family in the lands, the lionesses of Pride Rock, had to leave the Pridelands in search of food. Mufasa and Scar, along with the young cubs, would stay behind. Despite Scar's pleas for Mufasa to find another territory to rule, Mufasa was unable to leave. Pride Rock had a notorious and proud history and the King would sooner die than run away from it. The cubs, however, were too young to wonder aimless until the females found somewhere suitable to live.

But Scar was not pleased. This was an opportunity for him to King.

The dark Prince liaised with his hyena friends - the second most powerful family in the lands - and promised that if he were to be King, the Circle of Life would be history. Scar promised, during hard times, that the hyenas could pick off any living thing they desired - with the exception of his female relatives, who would hunt for additional food.

Foolishly, the hyenas agreed. While the lionesses were away on their gruelling hunting trip, Scar returned to Pride Rock in a panic. "Mufasa! The hyenas! They are attacking a young cheetah mother and her cubs!"

No further words were needed. The King sprung into action, leaping from Pride Rock to find the hyenas. Unfortunately, this act left the cubs in Scar's custody.

"Dad is so brave," said Jua to his sister and the other cubs. "One day, I hope I will be as brave as him! What do you think, Uncle Scar?"

The dark Prince smirked at the Future King, positioned by the entrance to the cave in which they rested. "No," he responded coldly.

While the cubs were startled and confused by Scar's remark, moments later Pride Rock was suddenly flooded with hyenas - those who hid themselves away until the King had left. "You will not," Scar added, prior to turning his back on the youngsters as the hungry hyenas advanced.

The cubs were trapped, there was no where to run. Despite this, Jua, although he knew his fate, stood before his sister and his friends, snarling at the predators. "Father will NEVER forgive you for this, you coward!"

Not everything went according to plan, however. Mufasa returned, surprisingly; although wounded from the battle. The King was devastated to hear that the hyenas did away with the cubs, blaming himself after he accepted Scar's story that he was unable to hold all of the hyenas off.

No relief came with the return of the lionesses. The once mighty pride had lost the will to live, but then the rains came and restored life - giving Mufasa the strength he needed to rule. Once again, he had a kingdom to look after, even though he had exiled all the hyenas.

Unfortunately, it took a while longer before Sarabi gave birth to Simba. The Pridelands might not have been as safe as they used to be, but the King and Queen needed an heir - much to Scar's disgust.
