Description
In the millions of years following the Holocene/Anthropocene extinctions, the few remaining populations of Elephants began to diversify, radiating into new forms with many diffirent ecological niches. One group of Elephants evolved into the Dolichotheres, which specialized into high-browsing herbivores, similar to the Sauropods of yesteryear. As the Earth's climate got progressively warmer, the tropical rainforests of Africa expanded across the equatorial region, creating a vast rainforest ecosystem larger than the present day Amazon. Due to the expansion of these forests, many species residing in Africa had to adapt, including the ancestors of the Microelephas genus.
Microelephas caudolongus is a species of dwarf elephant species found deep within the equatorial rainforests of Africa. To adapt with the very dense tropical foliage, Microelephas is much smaller than it's relatives, taking on a smaller size as an adaptation to it's closed-in enviornment. Another unique adaptation of Microelephas is their striking color, specifically the black and white patterning along the trunk. These markings act as camoflauge in dense foliage as well as allow other members of the species to recognize one another.
These dwarf elephants, like their relatives, are strictly herbivorous. However, Microelephas are much more adapted for browsing upon small-medium sized shrubs as well as grazing on low-lying vegetation. Similar to other Elephant species, Microelephas utilize family herds lead by older females. However, these herds tend to have fewer individuals than their relatives, only consisting of 4 - 10 individuals on average.
TGAOA is currently in development hell. Posts like these are unreleased/unfinished art pieces that have been touched up and posted on Deviantart. Although I am currently working on a diffirent project at the moment, I will one day return to TGAOA and add more to the series.
