Description I put together a basic and adjustable front page for the front that despite its' seeming complexity, naming hierarchies made it easy to redesign there entire package with 10 minutes notice. This was based on the idea that the race could have been a last minute thing so I wanted that ability.

What I had been asked for was something that could run 4 stories including the front. I thought it a good idea to include the quick hits to the left of the page and to have a cohesive national package. The tips that we normally run was switched to a local story and switched sides for the day putting it on the right. While the final headlines were not my own, I did have input.

I was pretty happy with the final result. I think it had more of a magazine feel that jumped off the racks. I'll never know how much the design had to do with it as almost all papers flew from the shelves the next day but I hope it was noticed.

Also want to note that I originally wanted it to read HISTORY instead of OBAMA! for the main head. Either way I'm happy with it but I'm often moved by the romantic notion of newspapers as "history's first draft."

Yes, I would have liked HISTORY as the head. This is wonderful layout. You are so talented, Shawn.

It seemed the most fitting head to me but I was overruled as the editor thought it would be hard to change them out should there be a last minute call to do so. Still, I could have done it in less time than most assume. I usually argue that I'm not any more talented than anyone else in the room, I just work quickly and pay attention to CRAP. Contrast Repetition Alignment and Proximity. That and a solid grasp of composition are 3/4 of the job.

But since you're offering the compliment:

Thank you.

Well, that's an odd reason. Wouldn't you have had to change out the picture, too?

I'd set up the photo so I just had to crop then create a path. By setting the naming hierarchy, I just had to do than then name it main. The headline has to be typed, transformed into boxes so that I could add the outline and then set on the right layer. For some reason they thought that was more difficult than it was.

Oh well. The most important thing was, OBAMA WON!

Yep. A republican pal of my mom made the comment that the popular vote was not as wide a gap as the electoral vote. I just kind of laughed and pointed out that W didn't even win the popular vote his first term if he wanted to be picky about it. Either way, this "W" was ours. lol

Sorry. W didn't even win. Read the book "Too Close to Call" for some great investigative reporting about what happened in Florida in 2000.

Oh, forgot to add. W never got my vote even for governor (I'm from Texas). But, what he did when trying to be governor was the final nail in the coffin as far as never getting my vote for president.

He promised, "I promise you all, personally, I will serve out my term as governor. I have no intention of running for president." He said that because the rumors were flying. But as soon as he secured the seat for republicans he turned around and started his presidential campaign. A republican friend said that was good. That he made sure we had a republican. I pointed out that if he truly believed that Rick Perry would make a good governor, he could have just gotten out of the way, endorsed the man and let him earn his office like everyone else.

And then he campaigned saying that he wanted to unite the parties after a doggedly party move.

How could I ever trust such a man?

Never could trust him. But you had an early exposure, didn't you.

I remember likening him to Mel Brooks character in Blazing Saddles.

I thought of him as Alfred E. Newman from MAD Magazine.

I did an editorial cartoon that had him sitting on a mall Santa's lap. I pointed out to the editor that the reason I always drew the suit too big is because it always felt like a kid trying to wear grown up clothes.

I've read portions that a friend e-mailed me. I was already pretty certain of such but in the annals of history the anal orifice took office. And I dont' think W took more than 50% of the popular vote on his re-election either, but I could be wrong on that one.

He had less than 50% as I recall.
