Necks...I swear they are evil...Here is all I know.. Necks angle forward slightly, the spine joins to the skull just behind the jaw and muscles join from the collar bone to round about the mid neck, ( specially in buff guys :'D)

everywhere i look, the only neck tutorials i can find are very detailed. all i want is a basic way to add a touch, no more, of realisticnes to my doodles

Hi! this reply is really late, but I relate to you. I never like drawing super detailed stuff.
One of the best things to do though, even if it's not as fun, is study the neck realistically first. As the OP did in the drawing, start with studying and drawing where the spine is from different angles and how the muscles are located around it. Try it in a few different angles, and then you're ready to stylize your newfound knowledge and divide it up into less detailed basic shapes to help you faster!
