The colors and the fact that the focus wasn't on the characters but the bots (//forgets what they were called... Angels I think...?) is what really drew me in.

No worries! Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series from 1995 developed and directed by Hideaki Anno. There is also a more recent remake of the series in the form of 4 separate movies (3 of which have already been released).Β

It's technically a mecha anime, though it deals with a lot of complex psychological issues along the way. Definitely check it out, maybe watch a few episodes and see if you like it. I'd start with the original 1995 show first, though you can also start with the first reboot movie if you want something more recent.Β
