When I first played through this part, I couldn't stop laughing...until I realized that you HAD TO FIGHT WITH THE STICK, and that it was an incredibly weak weapon.
Should've gone with a frying pan instead.

Me: Okay lets brake this down. Why did Roxas choose the stick.
Grenade, TNT, and C4: Although HIGHLY effective, these items only have a one time use, and also conflicts with the fact that they need to keep a 'Low Profile'
Handgun: Effective in both close and mid range combat, the handgun has a limited number of shots, which go quicker than you think, it is also limited to the skill of the user, and I doubt Xigbar gave him any lessons; and like the first three items, it conflicts with they're low profile restrictions.
Kunia and Shuriken: Although versatile and stealthy, they're usefulness is limited to the skill of the user and the quantity of the item; in this case, one of each and probably no prior experience, seeing as how he only went on a couple of missions with Larxene, and we all know she doesn't play nice with others.
The Combat Knife: Again although more effective and probably the most durable of the set shown, it's short reach would conflict with his natural skill with a long sword, meaning he would have to adjust his fighting style to a one handed short ranged blade, which would do him little good, seeing as how he would be using it for just this one mission.
The Sword: Although it would appear to be the best choice, in this given the situation; the odds that, that sword is not a decoration in this highly decorated castle is very low; and given the fact that it appears to look like a Katana, means that it is quite fragile if handled incorrectly, and given Roxas' style of fighting, I doubt he has the proper training to wield a Katana without breaking it.
The Stick: While it may appear to be the weakest choice for a weapon the odds that, that stick is made of a high quality durable wood is very high given the fact the castle is located in a dense forest, and seeing as how the stick is inside, the odds of it being weathered by the natural elements outside is also very low. Plus despite the the fact that it looks small in the picture, it was actually a decent size, meaning he could wield it properly with his natural fighting style. So in short, this stick could very well be the best choice for an alternative weapon.
Roxas: See, I knew what I was doing all along; and it worked out in the end, right Xion?
Xion: Yes Roxas, now hold still. *tightens bandages around head*

I still think the katana would probably be better than the stick. My reasoning: a metal sword is more durable than a wooden stick.

Yeah, but in the manga, Roxas grabbed a sword from the castle, and it was broken immediately. Which leads me to believe any-to-all swords in that castle are just for show, not for battle.

Then what about the knife? It's just as long as the stick, if not a little longer by an inch or two, but obviously much sharper and pointier.

The stick in the picture isn't draw to actual size, it's actually the size of a standard sword, so he can use it with his normal fighting style. While the knife is, at best, the size of his fore-arm(elbow to wrist), blade and handle included. Not a long enough reach to fit his fighting style.

That reminds me of a comic dub of that part of 358/2 days I saw, this is a line right after Xion hands Roxas a stick in the comic, and I quote. Roxas: a stick?, Doesn't anyone clean around here?! What the Fruitcake is a stick doing on a catchle floor?! God this place is a dump.

To be fair, IIRC, Heartless are supposed to be immune to non-magic weapons when the plot demands it. A sword would be just as effective as the stick against them.
