It was such an enjoyable image to work on. I have the feeling it wasnt that set up as the rest of the snaps didnt have that feel. This one just stood out. Probably just a family member. I actually have the camera it was taken on!

Thanks. I think the subject makes this though as its a beautiful old shot. You don't see many like this anymore.

with no disrespect to your re-touching skills (which are commendable)
i prefer the old one. the pose, composition etc are very dated...and the framing+scratches suit that feel.

I know what you mean and actually agree with you. Ive been using this as a tool to teach me more about photoshop and to be honest just scanning it in and putting it up as a deviation wouldnt really require me doing much. There really is something beautiful about aged photos in their original state and also for those who were there at the time there is quite a surreal quality abot seeing the pictures as "new" as it were.

thanks, i've never considered what it must be like for those who were around when the photo was new "the first time round" to see it "new" again...must be pretty strange, but nice.
you did a good job on this, and it's a great photo to restore....it's got a lot of character.

This is interesting, and the dog is hilarious! Where can I find more information about restoration by photoshop? I got some very old photographes of my family (from the early years of the 20_th century...) which I want to restore...

You should get hold of a book called "photoshop restoration and retouching" by Katrin Eismann. It really is a fantastic book and helps you through it all. But you need to have a general knowledge of photoshop. If I can help please ask questions.

you did a wonderful job! i love the original, too, because i adore objects that have become distressed over time.
