Description I never thought I would become a turtle owner, but fate dropped Tula in my lap (literally she loves to crawl up and sit on your lap). I always heard about people buying adorable little red eared sliders as pets and then dumping them in the nearest lake or pond when they grew out of their baby faze and became too much work, so I figured I didn't need such a high maintenance pet. On June 29, 2018 that went out the window when I discovered Tula.

We found her abandoned in a narrow 20 gal. tank with no food and no water. She had been the pet of a relative who had recently moved and had never been out of her tank and was kept in a couple inches of dirty water that was never cleaned out (when there was water). She was an older lady of 10-15 years and seemed so grateful when we gave her water and what was left of an old bottle of turtle food. We decided we had to bring her home and give her a better life.

Tula is the sweetest thing! She now has a filtered and roomy 40 gallon tank with enough room to swim in and a nice turtle topper tank basking platform to relax on. She absolutely loves to come out of her tank and visit her human friends and if you are sitting on the floor she insists on crawling up on your lap. I didn't realize how affectionate a reptile could be! She loves to follow me around the house and be around people.

Tula is an amazing pet!

Does her water need heating in your area? I mean I trust you know what you're doing but I at least found this artical enlightening .

I live in Las Vegas so the temps don't get too cold. She does have a heat emitter above her basking platform though. I thought she would have slowed down during winter, but she is as active as ever! Thank you for the article link!
