There had always been something eye-catching about the horizon past the edge of the forest.

Out beyond the branches of the pines, in the wide white where nothing grew and no prey roamed, far, far as the eye could see - there it was, again. Always. Anorthyte did not know what it was. No one did, for no one ventured into the wide white, where there was no food to find, no impassive pines standing watch and giving shelter. Nothing but snow.

But when the winds died over the wide white, when the pines paused in their groaning and knocking, when the sky seeped through the wide edge of the white, Anorthyte saw it.

Again. Always.
