Description This is propably one of the more rendered pieces I have done. I tried making this one a warmer palette than going on between cold greens and blues, so I gave it kind of a tropical feel.l

Just like the last two, this one started out as a tiny pencil sketch on paper, which I scanned, colored and later painted as a digital piece. I really love the look of these, so this seems like an effective strategy!

It is inspired by it! Shape of Water is already my favourite movie of 2018 TwT And I don't sense any competition there, really. So I definitely recommend it xD

Ohhhhh I would love to see some shape of water art from you if you liked it. I bet that would look lovely in your particular visual direction. And thank you! At the moment I am doing more purely digital stuffs to get more comfy with drawing on a tablet, but if i like a traditional sketch I can definitely scan it and splash some colors. x3

ITS THE FISH (WOW those teeth look like they hurt)
gosh i love the textures of these traditional digital painted arts you do
(and those colors give me life)
did you get to see the movie yet?Β

I did! And... THIS MOVIE WAS MADE FOR ME
I mean i always loved fish people, and romance with beastly creatures, and I adore Doug Jones's work, but, like, then they throw in this artist character who draws the creature and I'm like "THAT GUY IS ME"
Ahem. Yeah, I enjoyed it I guess. xD
Now that I saw it i actually did some more technical drawings from reference. Might do a proper fanart soon.Β

I saw it yesterday, and its beyond even what I hoped for! T.T Its such a beautiful tale of love and compassion, I'm just flooored. Currently ranks as no.2 of 2017 behind Blade Runner 2049 for me.

I’m still working on my 2017 list. Right now it’s It at no. 1, followed by Brigsby Bear, Coco, Shape of Water and Lady Bird. Blade Runner 2049 is coming up soon hopefully, and I can’t wait!

They were great. I’m seeing a lot of great films, I think I may have to do a top 20 or else i’ll Hate myself for leaving anything off, like Baby Driver and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Pretty basic really. Just a look into the life of a pretty pretentious teenage girl, especially the relationship between her and her mother.

Reminds me of the creature from "The Shape of Water". Very nicely done. It looks like it was rendered using pastel crayons.

That's exactly what all of these are inspired by. The Asset from Shape of Water mixxed with a healthy dose of ape sapien xP And thank you! I definitely like this look, think I'm gonna stick with it.

Del toro's films are always so damn inspiring artwise, I will have to go give it a gander when i finally get a free moment to do soΒ

It still annoys me that his adaption of At the mountains of madness got cancelled when Scott pilgrim bombed at the box office =/

At the mountains of madness? I think i heard him mention that one in interviews. What was it going to be about?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KRTR In reply to MonoFlax [2018-02-08 12:33:56 +0000 UTC]

Literally a true movie depiction of the lovecraft story "At the mountains of Madness" he seemed to be getting the go ahead to make it, but with Scott Pilgrim not covering its expenses at the box office, and Del toro's insistance the movie be R rated to stay true to the original story, the executives couldnt justify the expense.

Such a shame as you can clearly see the lovecraft influence in almost all of his monsters.Β

It's so unbelievably beautiful, I love the brushes you used and seeing some of the sketch lines beneath all the wonderful rendering. *swoons* You've got such a great grasp on lighting, it just looks so REAL man... I'm in love with these gillmen

MonoFlax In reply to Voltaic-Soda [2018-02-02 23:40:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank youuuu! I try to retain a lot of roughness in even my most rendered pieces. Don't want to lose all the momentum you get when you do a pencil sketch on paper. The lines you spotted are actual pencil on paper. x3 I definitely got a lot better at lighting when I started working more with multiply as a blending more for my layers in photoshop. Don't know if you can do that with other programs, but try using desaturated blues to lay in some shadows before you go in rendering it out. x3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Voltaic-Soda In reply to MonoFlax [2018-02-03 02:21:31 +0000 UTC]

I figured they were pencil lines, which adds so much to the overall image imo TwT

I use photoshop, but it's a really out of date version. I haven't been able to really experiment with multiply or other types of layer modes yet sadly. (I have used multiply to color a scanned in work without affecting lines though! Neat trick ;u; ) I usually just do everything on one layer xDΒ
The project didn't allow for much shadow fun because of the white backgrounds, but that won't be a confining factor anymore >: D *evil laugh* I like using a variety of colors when painting my shadows/highlights, depending on what elements/setting I chose for the piece. =w= Gonna be so good to get back to that!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MonoFlax In reply to Voltaic-Soda [2018-02-28 09:10:34 +0000 UTC]

You should have blending modes, i think they were introduced with photoshop cs2 or cs3. They are propably the most powerful tool in photoshop if you ask me. So definitely worth checking out. You dont need to look up the math behind it either, just try to experiment with them!
