Description
Kyoya and Tamaki from Ouran Koukou Host ClubThis started out as a joke for an anime contest on some random unknown doll contest board and somehow evolved into two dolls with a background XD HOW, I DON'T KNOW.
Anyway this is the first time I experimented with a palette like this, which consists mostly of dark blues, greens and black. It was really surprising how much versatility I got out of such dark colors while completely killing my eyesight DX *mainly worked at night so she could actually distinguish the blacks T3T* I tried to keep everything as simple as possible parts-wise (i.e. - clothing, props) and focused more on the technique itself.
As for the characters, Tamaki and Kyoya are pretty much the only characters I like from Host Club. I tried to give them distinctive facial features - Kyoya is supposed to look Asian while Tamaki has more of a European flair lol XD It's also the first time I worked with more realistic proportions; that explains the severe modding of the shobo13 base. The white was reeallly hard to do because I was really working with neon blue and it was just very off-putting. Tamaki's wearing an outfit I put together from several of his pictures and Kyoya's wearing his track jacket from the back of volume 1. He looks like a potential POT recruit -3-)

Wow, it's almost hard to believe this was done with pixels - the shading is so well done and there's so much depth to it.
I agree, the color palette worked amazingly - the colors really do look good. Just great. ^^

At first I saw this and didn't believe it was pixel art. I saw it on the the front page and thought "Ah, another person who misplaced a deviation in pixel art again." Then I clicked it.
This is really impressive pixel art. I think it's really awesome. There really are no words to express how amazing I think this is - beautiful work!

*has spazstic fit* Holy crap this is amazing! My computer screen's wonky so sorry if it's only me but, the chair legs up on the table seem a bit too bright. It looks like there's too much reflection for where it's placed. idk. I have no room to talk. . . . @__@ Still is gorgeous.

I know, you're going to get oodles of praise, but bear with me just a bit -- because.
It looks to me like you're slowly toe-ing the line between pixels and CG, and I think your work suffers from the way you straddle the line. I'd love to see you pursue one or the other a bit further; if CG, then smooth out your lines, blend your colors better, and ditch the .gif format. Perhaps make your colors look more natural and less 'dirty' -- not less dark, not less muted, but add some hue shifts in the shadows to make them look cooler, and to make the hilights look brighter.
You have fantastic fold work and design going on here, but there are areas that look a little sloppy. The banded effect on the shadows on the floor, the color-reduce-photo choppiness of the legs of the tables...as a piece, it holds such gorgeous potential. As a CG artist, I think you'd be absolutely fantastic. I just feel like the pixels are holding you back, some. You're using tools anyway -- why not go the whole 9 yards?

First of all, I'm not a very patient person. I'm also used to working on a smaller scale; perhaps not as small as most dolls but definitely not as huge as a CG. The mixed style I've been using so far allows me to experiment and play around the most. It's not as time-consuming as a full scale CG and at the same time allows me to make something that's "finished". But honestly I reeaally never had the patience for CGing XD I started out doing that but never really got anywhere with it. *stares at half finished piece she needs to finish for Sunday T3T*
Also regarding the quality of this particular piece - I saved it as a PNG so this is the actual image, no color reduction or anything. Don't we see similar bands of color in CGs done by some artists? It's really not much of a issue of perfection as much as a stylistic decision. The muted tones are something I've been doing a lot of lately due to J-rock art, etc, so I supposed they've found their way into this as well.
I'm sorry if I sounded really defensive but I'm sure you can understand.
