when i was kid i had a lot of this on my house. I loved to watch then on the trees hahahaha

I usually find them setting on a table, or like this one bringing a chair back in on hot days.

I'll keep an eye on the trees if that's where you see most of them at your place.
Maybe I'm missing a few in plain sight

They're one of my favorite creatures, but they show up rarely. How do you know if it's female?

One of my favorite creatures as well. If you go to a larger garden center in April or May and purchase a couple of mantis egg cases and place in your yard (well spaced from one another) you'll be rewarded with several making it to adult hood and hanging out with you in Aug-Oct. These are usually Tenodera aridifolia, the Chinese Mantis and grow quite large (females 8-10.5cm). The females are more robust than the males, your image looks like a big beautiful female. For an absolutely certain id, one would need to look at their naughty bits but I'm pretty sure this is a girl.
