"Wait for me, alright? I'll come back and we'll find somewhere safer, okay? I will come back," Damien told his younger brother before leaving. Nico waited for the day his brother would return, but it never came. Those walking corpses forced him to leave. He scavenged what ever seemed useful and could fit into his messenger bag, and he left. For a while he was on his own, setting traps near his little camp and killing any dead that came close.Β
In that time alone, he relived the events that led up to this. He was at home with his brother, Damien, his mother was at the market getting groceries for dinner, and he didn't have a father to remember. The brothers were in the living room just sitting and talking when the phone rang. He remembered Damien's reaction to the phone call from their mother. The pale face, wide eyes, shaky voice... it scared Nico to see his brother that way.Β Nico could barley hear his mother's rasping, pained voice as she sobbed apologies and farewells before the call hung up. They tried calling her again, but there was no answer. Something was wrong. Damien cautiously went to the window. "Nico, come here..." Damien ordered. He did as he was told and what he saw out the window shocked him. There were people attacking each other, biting and ripping apart limbs from bodies. They were grotesque in appearance with their rotting flesh and bloody forms. "Wh-what is that?! What's going on?!" Nico asked feeling panicked. "Come on, we have to get somewhere safe," his brother replied. They packed food, supplies, water, and a battery-powered radio before going upstairs to their mother's room to get the pistol and packages of bullets their mother kept locked in the dresser by her bed. While upstairs, the sound of pounding on the door and breaking glass shattered the tense silence. "We have to get out of here," Nico hissed under his breath. Damien loaded the gun and took a deep breath, "We are." BANG! BANG! BANG!
Gunshots snapped Nico out of thoughts and he jumped to his feet. He wasn't sure on what move to make, but decided to venture out of the "safe zone" that was his camp and scout out his surroundings. Gunshots meant survivors. And survivors could mean Damien...

"Oh hi!" Nico replied with a bright smile. He chuckled at her awkward yet cute demeanor. "Well good. I won't hurt you as long as you won't hurt me," he said. "I'm Nico. It's a pleasure to meet you, Β Catherine. " he held out a hand for her shake. "Why's a little girl like you wandering around alone during the zombie apocalypse? You certainly have more guts than I would've." He chuckled to himself.

Chathrine put on a smug face putting her arms on her hips "Oh please! I am 12 you know!" she said proudly "I ran, my best friend got bit..." she sighed, slightly tugging at the bandaids on her left leg with her other leg. She sighed and unloaded her gun replacing it in her bag "Just in case of those Walkers" she picked out a pocket knife and smirked. She seemed much prouder then a minute before.

Nico laughed. "Alright so you're not that little," he said then frowned, "Sorry to hear about your friend..." Then his frown turned to a smile. "Oh really? Well I have this." He pulled out his much larger machete from his bag. He smirked, feeling like showing off a little.

"Show off!" she mocked and laughed, pulling her gun back out "Well I dont have much to show off for!" she smiled but her smile dissapeared as she heard groaning nearby, she was DEAD scared of walkers, and if she was grabbed she wouldn't have the guts to shoot it. "Didi you hear that" she whispered.

Nico nodded and looked for the source of the noise. "Where's there's one, it usually means there's more," he muttered. "Stay quiet and don't use your gun unless you have to. They're attracted to sound."

"I know..." she said sighing as she heard the groaning stop "I think they're go-AH!" she screamed as it one grabbed her by the leg, she was in real trouble. She had the gun in her hand, yet she was so shaky, she couldn't shoot an accurate shot and could have shot her foot. She fell over, still pointing the gun at it.

Nico kicked the walker in the head until it broke it's grip on Catherine's leg. The zombie groaned before he stabbed it in the brain, the blade of his machete going through the skull with a sickening crunch of bone. "You okay?" he asked as he stepped over the body and her to her feet, leaving the weapon where it was.

She breathed fast, yet her breathing soon slowed "I'm fine..thanks..you saved me" she smiled, yet felt stupid and sighed, her smile dissappeared "I could have killed it, but no! MY STUPID LITTLE SELF STOPPED ME TO! Im such a coward" she said sighing "It's so stupid! I try to act brave then this happens" she said hearing it groan weakly once more, and shot it with incredible accuracy for such a young person.Β

Nico was surprised by her amazing accuracy but patted her on the back for reassurance. "It's alright, don't be so hard on yourself. You're just twelve." He tried to offer words of comfort but couldn't quite find any. His situation was different than hers: he had his brother and she has no one.

She sighed "Thanks I guess..." she unloaded the gun, and placed it in her bag, "I never asked, what community do you belong to..." she said sighing "I'm in the clubs, but I'm almost always on my own." she answered. Knowing she had just ben accepted a few days ago, she was barely known or trusted.

"You're in clubs too?" Nico grinned. "Well then welcome to the community." He grabbed his machete and started cleaning off the blood.

She giggled "THanks, at least someone cares. Nobody ever even looks at me. It's like Im a walker who talks or something" she laughed. "Don't you cut yourself with that thing. I heard from...someone...that infection can spread through cuts and contact with walkers!" she said her voice cautious, it was obvious she really cared.

Nico shook his head. "Honestly the nerve of some people..." He put his machete away. "Nope. I'm usually pretty careful. Hmm, who'd you hear that from?"

She sighed "My dad...I.." she almost broke into tears, but she was not that kind of person, no. "He got bit, he cut off his arm in hopes to stop the bite, but he was in so much suffering that...I.." she sighed "It was to late and I had to kill him OK" she said a small tear rolling down her cheek. "I-Im sorry I just..." she sighed.Β

She sighed, and smiled back up at him "It's ok, dont beat yourself up over it. It's my fault anyway" she sighed. "Anyway, what about you, how'd you get here" she asked with only good intention, she never meant to poke scars.Β

He looked at his scuffed up boots and mumbled, "well, it's not as sad a tale as yours but it's something. It used to be just my brother and I traveling around and doing our own thing but one day he left and just never came back. Cliche, I know. After that I found here and decided to stay."

"Oh I'm so sorry, he'll come back one day! I promise!" she smiled tilting her head to the side "I'll even help you look for him!" she said reassuringly "Plus if you never came here, I wouldn't have met you." she said kindly, she knew these two would become great friends, and Nico was so nice to her.Β

Nico smiled. "You're absolutely right," he said, "it's nice to have someone be friendlyfor once."

"Yeah it is!" she looked up at the sky, it was becoming very dark and she could hear more groaning "We should get back, it's getting dark, and there's more of em" she seemed much more serious than before, very mature for her age.

"Good idea," he replied, agreeing that it was probably best to head back.

"Keep quiet, STOP!" she whispered as she ducked down as a couple walkers past by, she had her gun out, yet she was trying as hard as possible to avoid it.

He quickly followed suit and crouched down. He once again drew his machete in case it came down to a quick confrontation with the walkers.

"DAMMIT!" she whispered as she heard one come behind her, she skillfully shot it a couple times, and grabbed Nico by the hand, and ran for it, until the safely reached camp.

Nico ran, being pulled along by the smaller girl. He took the opportunity to catch hisbreath once they wwere safely inside the community. "Nice....save..." he said between breaths.

"Thanks" she said as she breathed heavily, watching them clamp against the boundaries of the Camp "We should...be safe here" she sighed unloading her gun.

He nodded in response. "Yeah I think we're good, " he said.

"Close call back there. Damn things. Still dont know how this all started." she sighed, feeling sort of stupid for saying that.

"Neither do I. But most people probably don't anyway, " he replied then sighed.

"Why not, it could be good information, doesnt anybody want this to stop" she said remembering her family, though holding back the tears.

Nico shrugged. "There wasn't any warning. No sign that this was going to happen. Of course everyone wants this to end but who are we to figure out how to end it? You and I are not scientists. We don't know how to find a cure for this. But hopefully someone will eventually," he said. "All we can do now is try to make it out of this alive."

She sighed and kicked the ground, "I guess your right." she smiled pulling out a small photograph of her mother and father and smiled put it back in her pocked and looked up at the night sky "At least the sky sure is beutiful without all that smog and stuff." she laughed.

He smiles and stared up at the sky. "Yeah, it's so clear you can see just about everything," he said as his eyes scanned for any constellations he could remember.

"Mhhm" she smiled "Im happy I joined the community, some guys were hunting me down before I did, they were to scared to come near the community when I joined though." she said kicking the ground "Yeah you can, look theres Pisces, scorpio...." she said pointing out each constellation she could see.Β

"Well, I'm glad you joined the community too," Nico replied, "You seem to have had it a lot tougher than most."

"I've seen worse...believe me I'd know. I try not to think about it, it's only selfish for one to think about themselves only. I'm not sorry for myself, and I'd rarely let people be sorry for me. It makes me feel all numb inside for some reason. I guess that keeps me breathing." she smiled.

"So uh, how did you find these guys, or were you born into the community, to be honest, I dont know HOW long this thing has been going on." she sighed.

"I just kind of ran into them, I was being chased by a pack of walkers and these guys saved my butt from being bitten," he said with a small chuckle. He then thought for a moment. "Hmm... if my memory serves me correctly then it's been...2 or 3 years, I think."
(I honestly have no idea how longs it's been but most people put the time around there)

"Two to three years!!!?" she said surprised "It hadn't hit my area until YESTERDAY" she said extremely surprised. She sort of smiled "At least they're more experienced then I thought then" she sighed "A herd of them hit our town just yesterday evening, I ran and they found me and that's how I got here...I'm...still getting used to the idea of it" she sighed.

"YESTERDAY?!?! No way!!" he stared at her surprise then shook his head and sighed, "That's crazy.... Wait, wouldn't your town have gotten some kind of warning then?" he asked.

"Phone lines and electricity was down yesterday, we thought it was just a minor slip up, we live in an area outside a small town, so electricity is a bit shaky. then it happened while my parents were at work and..." she sighed.

"Oh," he mumbled then looked at the ground to kick a pebble with his shoe. "What was life for you like before all this?" he asked, trying to change the subject to something at least a little more cheerful.

"Nothing special, I had a good life...but nothing good lasts long, I should know" she sighed.

"Yeah," he sighed. "I used to play soccer on the school team with my brother. I miss that." he faintly smiled then kicked his pebble away. "Oh well..." he sighed, "Those days seem long gone now."

"Oh that's nice, I used to horse ride....and I unfortunately cant understand...i Β mean, I've only been through this for a day..." she sighed.

"I know you have," he sighed. "Things will get better though.... Were you in horse riding competitions?"

"I did, dressage infact, I was pretty good. heck I should have guessed something was wrong before yesterday, I hadn't received a single text from my friends" she laughed.Β

"At least you have a phone, mine got stolen at a soccer game a week before my town got overrun," he chuckled. "What's dressage?"

"Heh, i'd rather live without a phone, and you dont know what dressage is!" she said as her jaw dropped "It's one of the best horse riding competitions ever CREATED! You need to make a sequence of moves to result in absolute fancy awesomeness" she laughed.
