as detailed in the timeline , they weren't always a couple. Back at Fazbear's Fright, Springtrap planned to use Alex (the nightguard working there) as a meat shield + henchman to do his dirty work for him, after noticing how easily manipulated and gullible he was. He used him to free the 5 souls (not counting Cassidy) he inadvertently trapped into the realm of the living with his remnant experimentation (while he was seeking immortality for himself)

also yes it absolutely is supposed to be a villain/stupid henchman dynamic lol
