Description A severed hand I did for a zombie-movie I'm working on.

This really is just a quicky which turned out nicely.

I made an alginate-cast of my hand, filled it directly with latex and poured it out again. I used a highpowered blowdryer to dry the first layer and added another one. After three layers I filled the latex with PU-foam.
I pried the alginate open and Voila!...

A rushed paintjob, I agree, but since it won't get a close-up, it's okay.

Good work! I'd like to try working with alginate cast in the future.

I so want to make this! I'll have to on a hunt for alginate and all the other stuff needed! Was it very expensive?
Amazing work!

Actually no. You can buy alginate from amazon now (at least in germany) and it fares about 20 Euros for 2 kilograms. Latex is about 20 bucks for a litre and the foam costs about the same. So 60 bucks for a hand and enough material to multiple other projects.

Thank you so much for the information! I tried to purchase some Alginate from Amazon, but as always they wont ship it to Norway How much Alginate do you think is needed for a hand?

If you don't find a specialised dealer for alginate, just ask your dental technician. He probhably has a kilo or two on hand or can order some for you.
The amount you need depends on the casting method you use. If you cover your hand in layer of about one centimetre thickness and build a two-part supporting cast from plaster bandages, you'll need about half a kilo. If you pour the alginate into a box (like a cocoa-carton) -which I recommend- you'll need about 2 kilos. Possibly more, depending on the pose you want and the volume of the carton.

What kind of paint did you use? I'm looking into making a pose-able fake severed hand for a film that I'm making.

I use normal, watered-down acrylic paint. If the paint's thin enough, it won't come off through movement, but some kind of flexible sealer is recommended. I haven't completely figured out that problem yet. ATM I use a flexible transparent coating used in boat-building, but it has a notable shine to it.
You could also ad a splash of liquid latex to your watered-down paint. It holds pretty well, but it'll also add a shine.
The pros seem to use alcohol-based airbrush-color, but I cannot tell you what brand.

Very realistic, I like it. I've been looking around for art of severed body parts (since I wanna study how they look, for an upcoming artwork) and yours is the best I've found so far.

Thanks!
I used some kind of latex-based textile-coloring called "Hato-Tex". It's a german brand used to paint on t-shirts and other clothes. I thin it with ammonia.

I should probably switch to something more healthy and easier to use though. I'm experimenting with airbrush-colors right now.

It looks good on this high contrast photo, but in reality it's a little too red.

But thank you very much! ^_^
