Description This was an idea for a painting I had been kicking around. It was inspired by my many oceanic excursions on an oil rig. The sky and ocean often merged, creating a vast and beautiful void....that it felt like I was on the edge of the earth. Again, I wanted to paint it...but my work schedule doesn't allow me much time. As it is, I've been working on this piece on my lunch breaks. hhmmmm.... still not sure if I like how it turned out.....maybe I should quit art...

It shows, you've been watching the sea. The merging of the sea and the sky shows wonderfully here. I doubt something like this could be done without really observing your subject. The guy there seems to be stuck on that, whatever the thing is, and wants to get out, but there's not even a horizon in sight.

This truly tells a story, and sets the mood. The very aspect of the atmospheric haze really captures the feeling of seing out into an ocean that spans over the horizon. It *really* does feel like that. I especially like the coloring, the tones of the wood on the strange little pier, the hazy tones for the water and air, and the out-of-focus that you have for the foreground rigging and whatnot. Needless to say, if you can get work like this in during your rig schedule, you're doing really well handling both responsibilities. Work and art: Two bedfellows that may seem to be frustrating sometimes. But keep at it; if you can do work like this while making a living working at an industrial-type job (or any type of non-art job), you're refining your focus. Just think, if you hadn't had your oil rig experiences, this piece would not exist. And we would be that much more deprived of such a fantastic window into a story/world, which is told directly through your art. This really is an impressive piece, a definite production still from something big.

cool thanks man. I've actually been back on land doing an art type job. But I feel that any "art type" job is still just that- a job. Its a fun, yet tiring process. It is a sad truth of the post graduate....we concentrate on doing our "jobs", that we rarely have time or are too creatively drained to do other art for ourselves. I guess this was my aim with this. So enjoy it brother......and again, thanks for the always constructive comments sans the words "juxtaposition" and "composition".
