Well I have to disagree with you at one point. If you use fan art as a means to become popular, once you have become popular, it's highly unlikely that your watchers stick by you when not doing the fan art.
I mean I've started out on DA doing FullMetal Alchemist Fan Art and in 3 months i obtained around 5 000 pageviews and 100 or so watchers. The thing is that I've taken a long break. And after coming back, after 2 years I've had to literally work my way up to promote the original artwork I am making at the moment. Because none of the watchers I had back in 2008 will want to see anything of my art unless it's FMA related or Fan Art, of any sort.
Its hard, it's taken me 1 year to get back on track. And personally i am fine with an average of 76 pageviews per day. :3 That means 76 individuals bothered to visit my profile and see my artwork as their pages were loading, and they scrolled down to thank me for favoriting their work.
I once found out a guide for Novice Artists and it was very useful. It said:
"If you start doing Fan Art, the thing is, that's all you'll ever get to do and that's what you'll be expected to do." It's hard to get out of that label as a "Fan Artist". It took me almost a 2 year break and 1 year of actually drawing my novel's original artwork to shrug off that "Fan Artist" tag. I am not proud of it and HECK i will not go back to that ever again.
What I will do though is Warcraft "Fan Art". I put the "" quote marks here because it's not technically because of the numerous ways of customizing your characters. Not one WoW artist draws the same as another, unless they are tracing from somewhere. That's not a thing anime is capable of, or the generic Nintendo games like Pokemon, Zelda, Sonic or Mario or whatever. There aren't many interpretations and that's why I think Fan Art is not diverse. Adding anime to the equation just spells disaster when it comes to getting into the original scene (either by style, story or theme).

I disagree with the part about anime not being diverse. There are thousands of ways to draw eyes, hundreds of techniques for hair, hundreds of ways to color, hundreds and hundreds of different levels of detail, etc. So if you were to look up good anime/ manga, and compare them, you could see the difference.

It's still manga! It reduces the human anatomy to a few lines as opposed to real anatomy studies!

Not always, that's just the popular teen style.

I've been drawing line-arts for lots of fandoms, and that's boosted my pageviews greatly ^_^ I don't think anyone has used my line-arts, but I've gotten people to look at them!!
And if no one goes to your art on the new deviations page, then your deviation will get buried DX

Good art doesnt always help I mean you can draw like one anime that no one likes and your art can be great but people wont fav it cause they want their fav anime and dont apprecitate the greatness of their art

lol@being talented automatically makes you popular.
Not really. What makes you popular: fan art porn. I've seen lots of talented artists go unnoticed. And I've seen lots of crap in the "popular" category.

Hmm... interesting. Another element is time- I've been around for about... a year, and I almost havw 1000 pgeviews now.
Oh, and yet another one- make friends that aren't necesarily on DA, but are online... and then try to get them to be on DA. I have a few that always comments on my stuff. ^^
Find a popular mentor. O=
Have a great day!
