I read The Last Wish after finishing the third game. I liked a lot of the stories in that book. Haven't read any of the other books yet. I also read some of the comics dark horse published. Those were pretty good.

I think its nearly impossible for any medium to truly capture the essense of a book. Primarily because books are such personal experiences. The best you get it a basic structure, cliffnote details with distinctive visuals. Which ultimately represents someone else interpretation of that source material. I bought the books knowing the game was an interpretation and I wanted to expand my understanding. Plus it was just damn cool. I've always loved monsters and the lone hero concept. When I was a kid I did the same thing after seeing Blade Runner. I had to track down a copy of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep to expand my understanding of the material.
