Penso que para você retratar o ambiente que deseja sem perder a essência da idéia, poderia usar o blur para causar a profundidade desejada, e em opacidade menor, a névoa. Desta forma você não lesa a visibilidade do trabalho, uma vez que é possivel identificar os elementos sem necessariamente mesclar todos eles com uma névoa por cima. Entende o que eu quero dizer? Novamente, longe de mim ser áspero ou coisa do tipo.
