"Captain's Log: Supplemental.
"Have achieved stationary orbit over volcanic cone. Sensors indicate that this feature has been dormant for a least two hundred standard years. Have established network of sensor probes in geosynchronous orbit around the planet in relation to our position.
"All reports seem to indicate that no sentient lifeforms exists at this time. Some readings show there are abundant lifeforms scattered across the planetary surface, but no indication of any attempting a rudimentary climb towards sentience.
"Will continue a survey for the next 72 hours before recalling all probes and breaking orbit for our next destination. Will have all information loaded onto a message torpedo to be sent to the nearest Star Fleet installation.
