Description
whelpmy newyear's resolution was to learn how to animate.
...not my best work and I know I have a lot to learn, but huzah look I made it flap...sort of.
XD
I'll get better I promise
in the mean time if any of you have done any animation I'd be happy for some tips or tricks.
I'm currently using cs6 as my animation program.

Could this be any more adorable! Definitely leagues ahead of my first wing flap animation, that's for sure XD

I really like the primaries on the bird and the whole way you chose to shape their ends.

I tried animated simple gifs like this in photoshop and I am absolute garbage at it. XD and I know its not easy! But the shapes you did here are very appealing so far and I have to agree with an earlier comment, I think squashing and stretching the torso would really help, though I have to admit, that is way easier said than done.Β
As for tricks, aaron blaise has some animation tutorials that may helpΒ www.youtube.com/watch?v=2FR982β¦ Its even on bird flight! He uses tvpaint but it should still work with photoshop.Β

Super cute! I think something to look into for you is learning about squash and stretch - that'll really help getting some more "life" into your animation.
Also I'd recommend taking a look at some timing charts! It's worth it to learn about how objects move in relation to one another (see secondary motion) and it'll really help carry out the feel of the motion!
For example, if you used a different timing chart on the wings you could push how the "flap" feels so that there's real weight in the bird and it shows how strong the flap has to be to actually move the body!

oh yeah I'll certainly have to do some more work looking into it and practicing things like the more basic bounce or the jumping sack....I'll work on it

Best of luck! Even though those exercises are the "basic stuff", all that you learn from it really does get applied to every other animation.
You're never really done with bouncing balls in a way!

This is cute as heck. It's also very smooth, which is hard to do. It doesn't look jerky, but fluid! I hope to see more in the future. uvu

Thanks ;v;
If feels a little static to me still, but I'll work on that

XP
you know...I did...take half of the first animation class...just really wasn't what I thought it would be.

That was partially due to the teacher, I'm sure. Many people took issue with him.
Hell, he didn't even teach using decent programs, the 2D program was cheap and lacking and the 3D program was sub-par at best that caused more frustration then necessary (we called their tech support and they had no fucking clue how to help me and I was just trying to map a texture.)
To boot he had major biases towards styles and people. He just wasn't the best teacher.

Yeah...I left mostly because of the old programs...I think I would have been better off with a stack of paper and a light table then...what was it?....pencil...bryic?
...I don't even remember, but they were so....old. I thought for sure we would be using flash at least. I didn't think they would help me at all...oh well. I got a few things from it...mostly from the few 2d projects we had.

Yeah... DigiCel Flipbook for 2D. We used Lightwave for the 3D. I had never even heard of these before then. He didn't even know how to use Adobe Flash. We didn't finish our final animation but he had to pass us because we had to self teach ourselves the program.
Lightwave was a nightmare.
-it was constantly breaking
-other colleges had no clue what lightwave even was
-we called tech support because a texture wasn't mapping and I couldn't find online support. They had no fucking clue how to help- and I'm sorry, but when the devs of a program don't know how to help there is something wrong
-mr. G finally fixed my textures, but they broke the next day when I loaded up though NOTHING CHANGED

aw man I really wanted to see your final animation. You guys looked like your worked really hard on what you did have.
Light wave was sort of the end game for me...(mostly because I had a chance to try zbrush and was just blown away by how superior it was even though I only got to play with it for an hour or two)
pfft....I'd say that poser was a better program than lightwave...even then.

I prob have it somewhere on my portable hard drive- wherever it is. G had no idea how to use Z brush either and never included Sculptris in his modeling class, which I find dumb since it was free and SUPER easy to use.
Imo everything is better than Lightwave tbh.

This is very cute One thing that may help is looking at videos of animal movement/looking at still frame images of movement.

I'm defiantly going to have to do that XD
...there was this fellow who basically did nothing but take stop motion images of animals...I'll study them for awhile.
