Carpenter's film was not a "remake" of the earlier film, they have little in common other than alien and snow, everything about the 2 films like the location, the monster, the characters, discovery/origin of the ship etc. are worlds apart from each other, i consider them 2 separate and very different films that are 2 separate/different adaptations of the original 1938 source material called "Who Goes There" by John Campbell.
The definition of a remake is when it's based on a motion picture produced earlier like say The Blob for example, it's a TRUE remake in every way since it's based on an original screenplay and an original motion picture that isn't based on any source material. The Thing by Carpenter is a re-adaptation of the book and sticks closely where The Thing from Another World was a travesty of an adaptation.
It would be like saying every Dracula film is a "remake" of 1931's film and 1922's Nosferatu, nope they are all separate adaptations that have nothing to do with each other.
