Description “So, are you excited?” The employee asked as she read Chris down the hallway.

“Oh, yeah!” Chris replied with a nod, “the job sounded really interesting, I’ve always thought mascot work would be fun, but this is like… a step beyond that!”

The woman nodded, “oh I’m glad you agree! Here at Robozone we’re all about showing that bleeding edge tech in a way that’s fun and accessible for families- that extends to our cast members!”

Chris followed behind, only really half listening to the highly technical speech she was giving. He was just way more interested in seeing his uniform. At least, uniform was what they called it. From what the ad and interview said there wasn’t much of an actual suit or outfit. Instead it was going to be a much more intimate process: controlling a robotic body!

Needless to say it tickled Chris’s fancy. He had wanted to see what the bots would look like, but the company had been keeping their new mascots pretty secret for the big grand opening. So Chris was at least willing to wait a while, especially with the pretty handsome payment they were giving him for it.

“Alright,” the attendant said as she stopped and swiped a keycard at a door, “right through here we’ll be getting you synced up!”

The door slid open and revealed a slick looking room. It felt like it was straight out of a Sci-Fi movie, with the big monitors and the polished off-white machines and metallic grey color palette of the room itself. He looked around for a moment, his eyes instantly landing on the bot set up next to a big chair.

“Wow! So this is what I’ll look like on the job, huh?” Chris asked, walking over towards it.

The bot was a foot or two shorter than him, standing at attention on its rounded, flat feet. Two hoselike arms hung down at either side with white, toony gloves on both hands. The small rabbit robot “wore” (technically the cosmetics were pretty attached) a little red vest and a cap, both of which were emblazoned with the logo of Robozone.

“Yep, that’s Robbie Rabbot! Ready to try him on?”

“You bet!” Chris nodded eagerly, “uhh… how?”

“Just sit in that chair right there,” the attendant remarked, pointing over towards it, “other than that, just relax!”

Chris flopped into the chair, leaning back and letting his eyes drift shut. The attendant tightened some restraints on him and walked over to a terminal on the other side of the room. After a countdown she pressed a button, flooding Chris’s mind with this strange, almost euphoric sensation. He shuddered as the momentary sensation passed. When he opened his eyes he wasn’t restrained anymore. He was standing upright, right next to the chair that… he was sitting in?

Chris let out a little gasp and looked down at his hands. Those were Robbie’s gloves alright!

“Woah…,” Chris muttered, still staring at his hands, “it… it worked!”

“How do you feel there Robbie?” The attendant asked.

“I feel great! But you don’t have to call me that. My name is still Robbie!”

Chris blinked a few times. That’s not what he tried to say. He tried to say his name, the one that he knew wasn’t Robbie. Yet, despite that, Robbie was what he said! He tried to say his name a few more times, only to find that Robbie was all he could say.

“Sorry,” the attendant chuckled, “it’s a failsafe for your character. Can’t have you breaking character and breaking illusion in front of the kids. So you have a name filter, as well as a profanity filter installed.”

“Oh? Shoot, frick, darn, crap!” Chris chuckled, “heh, fair enough!”

“Now, take some time to get warmed up! You’re not needed at the ribbon cutting, but you’ll be over in your little pavilion waiting for guests. Don’t worry about anything, you have full access to all the park’s databases, so you should be able to help with just about anything. Other than that, just do what comes naturally! Like you did in the rehearsal.”

Chris gave the attendant a little salute as she headed off. He took a few moments, taking some steps in his mechanical form just to get a feel for it. Once he felt fairly confident he headed into the park itself, following the built in GPS Robbie came with.

Guests poured in shortly thereafter. He did his job to greet people, pointing them in the right direction to attractions and bathrooms, all with a chipper tone to his voice. Everything felt super easy, anything that was related to helping guests just kind of came to him like an automatic search engine. He was able to help with total confidence.

“Hey, Mr. Bunny! Take a picture with me!” A kid called out.

There was a jolt in Chris’s head as he instantly pivoted, turning around to face the kid. He headed right over, posing for a picture with a silly pose. He wasn’t even sure what had happened until he was halfway through the photo shoot. Just as he was starting to question it, another kid asked for a picture.

Without thinking his body complied, heading over for that picture. Then another, and another. Then from across the pavilion called out, asking for a staff member to escort her to where she was looking for.

Another jolt sent Chris right over, as if he had to answer any and every request that came his way as long as it wasn’t too ridiculous. What followed was a pretty full day of being tugged back and forth by guests, answering requests a mile a minute without time to stop. It was a good thing he was in that cute robot body, or else he’d have collapsed in exhaustion!

As his shift ended he headed back to the room with the chair, only to notice that his body was gone.

“Hey uh, aren’t you guys going to put me back in my body?” Chris asked.

One of the technicians chuckled, only to freeze as he realized Chris was serious.

“Um,” the technician muttered, “didn’t you, uh, read the contract there buddy?”

“What… what do you mean?”

“Tech isn’t good enough to put someone back in their original body. It’s sorta like, a one way trip from flesh to robot. That’s why you’re getting paid so much.”

Chris stood there frozen in place for a moment. He wasn’t sure how to take the news. On the one hand, the work was fun and so was the body. But being that way forever, no going back? That was… a lot to take in.

But, hey, at least the profanity filter was about to get some serious good use, because Chris was surely about to drop at least a few bombs before he fully settled down.
